NIH D43 training grant

The NIH has announced a training grant aimed specifically at young researchers. This is a competing renewal application for the training program entitled “Enhancing vivax malaria research in
Thailand” (D43TW006571).

The program aims to provide both long and short term training to scientists from malaria endemic regions of Thailand and Myanmar, to help junior researchers establish and develop careers as malaria researchers. The program will run for five years. The following positions are available:
           

·         Junior faculty members will be able to apply for $15,000 for a two year training program in malaria research. 5 junior faculty members will be trained over a 5 year period. The junior members will be mentored, and will work collaboratively with the postdoctoral fellows and PhD students.

·         Postdoctoral Fellows will be able to complete 2-3 year programs. 4 Fellows will be trained during the 5 year period. All postdoctoral fellows will be hosted at endemic area universities, allowing them to develop the skills necessary to become successful researchers in the region. Postdoctoral Fellows will receive a salary.

·         6 PhD students will be accepted for up to 5 years. Trainees will register and receive their PhD's through Mahidol University. PhD students will receive tuition fees and a stipend.

Participants will receive training in three main thematic areas - Changing malaria epidemiology, Drug resistance and Transmission blocking vaccines. These topics will cover a wide variety of subjects, and will allow participants to develop a wide range of relevant skills necessary to become successful independent researchers.

Short term training will also be available through an annual workshop held at Mahidol University. Topics will include epidemiology, biostatistics, drug resistance management, in vitro culture techniques for P. vivax, bioethics, and scientific writing (publications and grant proposals).

Funding Opportunity Purpose	The application should propose a collaborative research training program that will strengthen the capacity of an LMIC institution to conduct infectious disease (excluding HIV/AIDS and select agents). FIC will support research-training programs that focus on major endemic or life-threatening emerging infectious diseases, neglected tropical diseases, infections that frequently occur as co-infections in HIV infected individuals or infections associated with non-communicable disease conditions of public health importance in LMICs. FIC will also support revisions to existing GID research training grants to support training for LMIC advanced post-doctoral researchers to conduct research on the relationship of infectious disease to chronic disease conditions of public health importance.

Summary:

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA)invites new planning grant applications for the Global Infectious Disease (GID) Research Training Program from applicants at low- and middle-income research institutions (LMICs). Thailand is a middle-income country.

The application should propose plans to develop a collaborative research training program with a U.S. institution that will strengthen the capacity of the applicant institution to conduct infectious disease (excluding HIV/AIDS and select agents) research.  

Planning grants should describe the planning process and detailed vision  for developing a research-training program that focuses on major endemic or life-threatening emerging infectious diseases, neglected tropical diseases, infections that frequently occur as co-infections in HIV infected individuals or infections associated with non-communicable disease conditions in LMICs.

 APMEN Fellowship Program 2014 – call for applications

Background:
The Asia Pacific Malaria Elimination Effort has announced a call for applications for their Fellowship Program 2014. The organization was established in 2009 to bring attention and support to the under-appreciated and little-known work of malaria elimination in Asia Pacific, with a particular focus on P. vivax.

Purpose:
The APMEN Fellowship Program aims to equip the next generation of leaders and health workers from low and middle-income malaria-endemic regions with the tools and training to guide malaria elimination in the coming decades. It is also designed to promote collaboration by strengthening exchanges and lesson sharing among Country Partners and Partner Institutions in the region. The proposed project must be focused on malaria elimination.

The Fellowship provides capacity building opportunities for short-term (1-3 months) field work, professional development, and advanced training in issues and techniques that are important to malaria elimination but not always available in the recipient’s home country.

Horizon 2020 is the largest EU Research and Innovation program ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020). Horizon 2020 is coupling research and innovation with an emphasis on excellent science, industrial leadership and societal challenges. The goal is to remove barriers to innovation, and make it easier for the public and private sectors to work together in delivering innovation.

Horizon 2020 is open to participation by Thai and Southeast Asian researchers.  NSTDA along with SEA-EU-NET, INCONTACT 2020 and EURAXESS Links ASEAN are organizing this Infoday and the two workshops to inform researchers from across ASEAN about funding and mobility opportunities under Horizon 2020, and to facilitate their participation in European collaborative projects.

In addition to giving a general overview of Horizon 2020, this Infoday will provide specific information on upcoming Calls for Proposals, in particular those open to Thai and Southeast Asian researchers. On Day 2 workshops will be conducted on how to write a successful European proposal as well as on the technical and financial management of EU funded projects.

Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Medical Discovery Award

Outline

Applications have opened for the US Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Medical Discovery Award Grants. These grants are tailored to ‘innovative, untested, high-risk’ research proposals, and aim to provide ‘robust preliminary data’ that can be used in further research. Research must be centered on at least one of 25 topic areas, including malaria.  

 

Although the inclusion of preliminary data in applications is strongly discouraged, the application should include a well formulated, testable hypothesis based on a sound scientific rationale and study design. The grants cannot be used for clinical trials, although clinical research is permitted.

 

Duration and funding:

Projects can run for a maximum of 18 months, although can be shorter than this. The maximum budget is US $200,000, with additional allowances for indirect costs and travel. The total program funding is 12 million US dollars.

 

Applications will close on July 30^th, 2014. The announcements will be made by September 30^th, 2015.

USAID has published a request for applications to its Emerging Pandemic Threats program (EPT-2). One five year project will be funded, up to USD 50 million that fulfills the grant’s purpose and goals, as stated below. 

Purpose:

The goal of One Health Workforce (OHW) is to employ the strengths of universities to prepare the “One Health” workforce in core competencies and skills for preventing, controlling, detecting and responding to zoonotic diseases.

Like its predecessors, EPT-2 has three overarching purposes: (1) prevention of the spillover, amplification, and spread of new zoonotic viruses; (2) early detection of new viruses when they do emerge; and (3) their timely and effective control.

Goals:

Objective 1: Support African and Southeast Asian One Health University Networks to participate with government, academia, and other key partners in defining one health workforce needs. (This objective contributes to EPT-2 Strategic Areas of Focus 4 and 5, and it is linked to the EPT-2 “Preparedness and Response” project).

Objective 2: Support the African and Southeast Asian One Health University Networks to assist government ministries to train the future “One Health” workforce. (This objective contributes to EPT-2 Strategic Area of Focus 5, and it is linked to the EPT-2 “PREDICT-2” and “Preparedness.

Objective 3: Support the African and Southeast Asian One Health University Networks to assist government ministries to train the current “One Health” workforce (This objective contributes to Strategic Areas of Focus 4 and 5, and it is linked to the EPT-2 “Preparedness and Response” project)

Objective 4: Support developed country. Universities under OHW in strengthening faculty capacities for One Health teaching, research, and community outreach for the African and Southeast Asian One Health University Networks. (This objective contributes to EPT-2 Strategic Area of Focus 5, and it is linked to the EPT-2 “PREDICT-2 and “Preparedness and Response” projects)

Objective 5: Provide organizational development support to the African and Southeast Asian One Health University Networks (This objective contributes to EPT-2 Strategic Area of Focus 5) USAID views OHCEA, SEAOHUN, and the four Southeast Asian National Coordinating Offices (INDOHUN, VOHUN, MAYOHUN, THOHUN) as the pivotal organizations for leading change in academic approaches to creating the one health workforce.
