MMV 11th Call for proposals, 2013

MMV welcomes projects in the hit-to-lead and lead optimization stages for new families of molecules specifically addressing the key priorities of the malaria eradication agenda: transmission blocking via the human host, and prevention of P. vivax relapse through killing of liver-stage hypnozoites or reactivating them so as to be killed in the blood stages. 

In addition, proposals are sought for novel chemical series with a long half-life (ideally >10h in rodents) and confirmed in vivo efficacy that could have potential for well tolerated P. falciparum chemoprophylaxis or asexual blood stage treatment in humans. Any proposals based on existing chemotypes must clearly address known issues.

Please note that early target validation falls outside of our mandate.

Finally, we also welcome proposals on novel translational study concepts that enable early confirmation of relapse prevention, transmission blocking and prophylactic activity in humans.

There are two stages to the process of seeking funding of a project through the Medicines for Malaria Venture. The first stage is a concise 3 page LOI outlining the project using the guidelines and templates provided. These letters will be competitively assessed by MMV and MMV’s Expert Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC). A short‐list of projects will then be invited for the submission of a more detailed proposal, which will be presented and discussed at the MMV offices in Geneva, in a face‐to‐face meeting (later in 2013) with MMV and MMV ESAC. Experience has shown that MMV funding is highly competitive and it is in your interest to present all relevant data as completely and as concisely as possible.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Stars in Global Health program enables innovators to develop Bold Ideas with Big Impact to improve global health conditions. The program was developed to tap into innovative ideas from leaders in global health and consists of proof-of-concept awards of $100,000 CAD as Phase I grants, and Phase II Transition to Scale funding to successful applicants for up to $1,000,000 CAD.

Innovators who are eligible to apply include those from:

• Low-income countries
• Lower-middle-income countries
• Upper-middle-income countries of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)
• Canadian International Development Agencies (CIDA) Countries of Focus
• Canada.

Proposed innovations must address complex real-world challenges using an Integrated Innovationapproach. Integrated Innovation is the coordinated application of scientific/technological, social and business innovation to develop solutions to complex challenges. Since July 2011, Grand Challenges Canada has approved over 100 Phase I proof-of-concept grants, each at $100,000 CAD. These projects run across the whole spectrum of global health, from drug discovery, vaccine development, health and medical education, maternal and child health, non-communicable diseases (including cancer), health-related water and agriculture, information communication technologies and behavioural change.

Phase I grantees who have completed a minimum of nine months of their Grand Challenges Canada grant, completed their proof-of-concept projects and will have solutions that are ready to transition to scale are invited to submit Phase II Transition to Scale proposals. Phase II Transition to Scalegrants will require 50% matching through partnerships to be eligible for Grand Challenges Canada funding.

How to obtain funding

• Regarding Chairs and Post-Doctoral Fellowships, only research institutions may submit applications ("Call for Applications"). No individual applications will be considered. For more information on our process please view the Requirements for any application page and the How to register an institutionpage. Please use this search engine to check if your institution is registered and to know who to contact to be able to apply through this institution.
• We encourage institutions to organise a fair and transparent internal selection process and communicate widely on opportunities offered by the AXA Research Fund, as the number of candidates they can propose is limited.

• The global selection rate is 15%.
• Moreover, please note that the AXA Research Fund will be proposing new funding schemes as of 2013. Three new funding schemes will be created: AXA Outlooks, AXA Awards and AXA Joint Research Initiatives. These will be awarded by our Scientific Board following recommendations made by independent Search Committees composed of eminent academics (“Call for Nominations”).

Small Grants for New Investigators to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (R03)

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to provide support for New Investigators from backgrounds nationally underrepresented in biomedical research to conduct small research projects in the scientific mission areas of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS).  The scientific mission areas of the Institutes and Office are: NIDDK -diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism, digestive diseases, hepatology, obesity, nutrition, kidney, urology, or hematology; NIMH – factors contributing to mental disorders, the trajectories of mental disorders, pre-emption and treatment of mental disorders, identify and improve interventions for mental illness; and ODS – all types of research in which the primary emphasis is the investigation of dietary supplements and/or their ingredients. The NIDDK, NIMH and ODS recognize the need to promote diversity in the health-related research workforce by increasing the pool of highly trained researchers from diverse backgrounds conducting research in areas of importance to these Institutes and Office. The R03 grant mechanism supports different types of projects including pilot and feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology. The R03 is intended to support small research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources with the ultimate goal of providing the preliminary data for a R01-equivalent application.
