Wellcome Trust Fellowships - training, intermediate, senior

Wellcome Trust has three different fellowships on offer. Take a look at the options and find which one best fits your situation. They are all for researchers in Low and Middle Income Countries ( this includes Thailand). They all cover your salary and the research expenses of your proposed project. You can stay in your current job or move to a new university in an LMIC.

Training Fellowships

• For early stage researchers. You must have some research experience 
• Funding for 3 years
• You must have a PhD OR a degree in a subject relevant to public health or tropical medicine OR a degree in medicine.

Intermediate Fellowships

• For mid-career researchers
• Funding for 5 years
• You must have a PhD or a degree in medicine 
• You to need to have made contributions to your area of research - e.g. publications, patents, software development or an impact on health policy or practice

Senior Research Fellowships

• You need to be an established researcher leading your own independent research programme
• Funding for 5 years ( plus extension possible) 
• You must have a PhD or a degree in medicine 
• You to need to have made significant research experience and want to become a leading investigator

Wellcome Trust - Collaborative Awards in Science

Collaborative Awards promote the development of new ideas and speed the pace of discovery. The Trust funds teams of researchers, consisting of independent research groups, to work together on the most important scientific problems that can only be solved through collaborative efforts.

Collaborative Awards are for teams of researchers bringing together the relevant expertise and experience to address the most important scientific problems.

Your proposal should describe a significant piece of work that addresses the most important questions, in an area relevant to the mission of the Wellcome Trust.

You should be able to demonstrate why the scientific problem you are tackling can only be solved through an integrated, collaborative team effort.

Each applicant must be essential to the proposed collaborative research and have:

• Proven research expertise and experience in their field.
• An academic or research post (or equivalent).
• A salary for the duration of the award period. 

Members of the team must have proven experience in collaborative research and consist of independent research groups.

Team size will depend on the proposed research, but should generally have more than two applicants, and no more than seven. Teams may be based in the same or in different organisations, and must bring different expertise or disciplines to the research question.


Eligibility - Applicants should be based at eligible organisations in the UK, Republic of Ireland, or low- or middle-income countries ( this includes Thailand).

Budget available - up to £4 million

Duration - up to 5 years

Wellcome Trust - Seed Awards in Science

Seed Awards in Science help researchers develop new ideas to make them competitive for larger awards (from Wellcome Trust or other organisations).

Researchers:

• at the start of their independent careers
• who want to develop ideas outside their discipline or area of expertise

are particularly encouraged.

These awards give scope for innovative methodologies and activities, such as:

• pilot and scoping studies
• preliminary data gathering
• proof-of-principle studies
• planning sessions
• collaborative network meetings. 

Seed Awards in Science are not for:

• discrete projects with no follow-on plans
• bridge funding or short-term fellowships.

Eligibility: you must have a PhD and be based at a university in the UK or an LMIC ( low and middle income country, this includes Thailand) 

Budget: Applicants may request up to 100,000 GBP   

Duration: The maximum project period is 2 years.

Training Fellowships in Public Health and Tropical Medicine - Wellcome Trust

This scheme offers research experience and training to early-stage researchers from low- and middle-income countries. The scheme aims to support research that will improve public health and tropical medicine at a local, national and global level.

You can apply for a Training Fellowship in Public Health and Tropical Medicine if you’re a researcher based in a low- or middle-income country. You must want to undertake a guided period of research so that you can consolidate your existing experience and explore new areas of research.

Your research proposal should focus on one of the areas within the Wellcome Trust's public health and tropical medicine remit. 

The Trust will review:

• your research experience
• the quality and importance of your research question(s)
• your knowledge of the scientific area
• the feasibility of your proposal
• the suitability of your choice of research sponsors and environments
• your vision of how this fellowship will contribute to your career development.

Funding: Salary, fees and research expenses covered

Duration: 3 years
