Zika Virus (ZIKV) Complications (NIH, R21)


The purpose of this funding is to provide support for research on Zika virus (ZIKV) and its complications.
The R21 activity code is intended to encourage new exploratory and developmental research projects. These studies may involve considerable risk but may lead to a breakthrough in a particular area, or to the development of novel techniques, agents, methodologies, models, or applications that could have a major impact on a field of biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research.

Areas of high priority include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Demonstrate the causative role of infection in pregnancy with ZIKV in the etiology of fetal microcephaly, structural brain defects, and other congenital malformations
  • Basic research to understand the ZIKV infection pathogenesis and transmission to the fetus, whether in-utero, postpartum, or breastfeeding
  • Population-based studies to characterize the epidemiology of ZIKV infection in the mother-infant dyad
  • Clinical studies to improve the understanding of the mechanisms and risks of maternal-to-child transmission of ZIKV
  • Determine the timeline for when and how women transmit ZIKV to the fetus
  • Strategies to prevent transmission of ZIKV to the fetus after infection in the mother
  • Studies to determine the optimal screening for and management of ZIKV infection in pregnant women and in exposed fetuses
  • Studies to understand the mechanisms by which ZIKV affects the developing nervous system and other organ systems
  • Studies to characterize the association of ZIKA virus infection with ocular phenotypes
  • Research to develop lab-based or point-of-care diagnosis for ZIKV using saliva as a biofluid
  • Studies to characterize the outcome of viral infection on craniofacial skeletal and dental phenotype with or without microcephaly
  • Studies to understand pregnancy outcomes in women infected with ZIKV
  • Studies to identify sequelae in infants infected with ZIKV as well as potential sequelae in exposed but uninfected infants
  • Strategies to identify neurologic and other manifestations in infants with and without microcephaly such as developmental delays and other neurologic or physical disorders
  • Studies to assess and characterize the natural history and long-term neurodevelopmental consequences of ZIKV infection in children
  • Strategies to identify effective treatments for exposed infants with and without microcephaly as they develop into childhood.  Such strategies must take into account cultural acceptance and resources.
  • Investigations of mediating and moderating factors affecting variability in neurodevelopmental, behavioral, and socio-emotional impact of ZIKV exposure on infants prenatally and postnatally
  • Develop novel, simple, feasible and cost-effective testing methods and/or strategies for infection screening during pregnancy
  • Develop novel, simple, rapid, feasible and cost effective testing methods and/or strategies for infection screening in the infant
  • Develop culturally sensitive strategies to increase knowledge about the relative efficacy of contraceptive methods, and use that knowledge to plan for pregnancy
  • Strategies to integrate the discussion of risk of ZIKV infection into contraceptive counseling and pre-pregnancy and prenatal care at medical facilities in ZIKV endemic areas
  • Determine long-term implications of ZIKV infection in non-pregnant women and men including impact on fertility and subsequent pregnancy
  • Studies to ascertain if ZIKV is present in reproductive fluids such as semen, cervical mucus, vaginal secretions and/or follicular fluid; persistence of ZIKV in these fluids; and the mechanisms by which ZIKV enters the reproductive tract Studies to understand ZIKV infection in the testis
  • Studies to understand ZIKV infection in the testis
  • Studies on effects of ZIKV on in vitro fertilization
  • Studies on whether ZIKV can be transmitted by direct sexual contact or artificial reproductive technology procedures
  • Once causality is demonstrated, studies on vaccine development in pregnant women and children
  • Once causality is demonstrated, development of methods to explain risk of ZIKV infection and  
  • risk of harm to the fetus to pregnant women and women who are planning to become pregnant.
  • Basic research to understand ZIKV infection, replication, pathogenesis, transmission, immune
  • responses and immunological interactions with other flaviviruses
  • Studies on the evolution and emergence of ZIKV including the identification of factors that affect
  • host-range and virulence
  • Natural history studies of ZIKV in mosquitos, non-human primates and humans, with particular
  • emphasis on hosts(s) reservoirs and cross-species transmission
  • Basic research on the biology of the mosquito vectors, vector competence studies for replication
  • and transmission of ZIKV, host-virus interaction and studies on novel vector control methods
  • Development of novel diagnostic, vaccine and therapeutic strategies against Zika
  • Characterization of the prevalence of the virus among blood donors in different geographical regions
  • Studies of Guillain-BarrĂ© Syndrome (GBS), encephalitis or encephalomyelitis associated with ZIKV infection to determine disease course and outcomes, causality, disease mechanisms, effectiveness of current treatments and to develop novel treatments
  • Studies to understand the effects of ZIKV infection on the development of epilepsy and its sequelae
  • Studies related to both the short and long-term effects of Zika virus infection on hearing.

Eligibility: Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Institutions) are eligible to apply.

Budget: Direct costs are limited to $275,000 over the two-year period, with no more than $200,000 in direct costs allowed in any single year.

Research to Advance Vaccine Safety (NIH, R01)

The purpose of this funding is to support research that will contribute to the overall understanding of vaccine safety.

This research opportunity encourages studies that address scientific areas potentially relevant to vaccine safety such as:
 1) physiological and immunological responses to vaccines and vaccine components
 2) how genetic variations affect immune/physiological responses that may impact vaccine safety
 3) identification of risk factors and biological markers that may be used to assess whether there is a relationship between certain diseases or disorders and licensed vaccines
4) creation/evaluation of statistical methodologies for analyzing data on vaccine safety, including data available from existing data sources such as passive reporting systems or healthcare databases
5) the application of genomic/molecular technologies and systems biology approaches to evaluate vaccine safety.

( Clinical trials will not be supported.)

Global Health Program for Fellows and Scholars

The Global Health Program for Fellows and Scholars provides supportive mentorship, research opportunities and a collaborative research environment for early stage investigators from the U.S. and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), to enhance their global health research expertise and their careers. 

Fogarty is currently seeking applications for consortia to develop and support global health research training programs. Applicants should form a consortium that may include up to 4 U.S. academic institutions and six or more additional collaborating institutions or research project sites in LMICs.

Fogarty will fund up to five consortia to develop and support global health research training programs that meet the following objectives:
  • Provide mentored research training for pre-doctoral and pre-professional degree students and post-doctoral and recent post-professional degree students (trainees) from the U.S. and low- and middle- income countries (LMICs) in global health research at established biomedical and health research sites in LMICs, particularly those supported by the NIH.
  • Provide all trainees with instruction and training in rigorous research design, research ethics and statistical analysis through mentored research training.
  • Provide training opportunities in diverse areas of research relevant to the health priorities of collaborating LMICs and the mission areas of component NIH Institutes and Centers participating in this FOA.
  • Provide knowledge and skills to prepare trainees for careers in health research.
  • Strengthen global health programs at U.S. academic institutions and help to sustain health research at institutions in LMICs.
The program will provide research training opportunities in priority health areas in LMICs such as communicable diseases including HIV/AIDS; chronic non-communicable diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, lung diseases, blood diseases, mental health, and neurological diseases and stroke; women’s health; and behavioral and social aspects of health and illness.  Cross-cutting global health research areas are also encouraged.

NIH Grant - Partnerships for Countermeasures Against Select Pathogens (R01)

This grant provides funding for milestone-driven preclinical research that will advance the development and/or production of lead therapeutics, vaccines or medical diagnostics for select Emerging Infectious Diseases/Pathogens. 

All projects must have investment by at least one industry participant. Industry means a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, bioengineering, or chemical company.

NIH - Modeling of Infectious Disease Agent Study Research Projects (R01)

Purpose

To support innovative research that will develop and apply computational tools and methods for modeling interactions between infectious agents and their hosts, disease spread, prediction systems and response strategies. 

The models should be useful to researchers, policymakers, or public health workers who want to better understand and respond to infectious diseases. 

This research opportunity encourages applications from institutions/organizations that propose to provide the scientific and public health communities better resources, knowledge, and tools to improve their ability to prepare for, identify, detect, control, and prevent the spread of infectious diseases caused by naturally occurring or intentionally released pathogens, including those relevant to biodefense.

Global Infectious Disease Research Training Program (D43)

Funding Opportunity Purpose


This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications for the Global Infectious Disease (GID) Research Training Program from U.S. and low- and middle-income country (LMIC) institutions. (Thailand is a LMIC)

The application should propose a collaborative research training program that will strengthen the capacity of an LMIC institution to conduct infectious disease (excluding HIV/AIDS and select agents) research. 

Fogarty International Center will support research-training programs that focus on major endemic or life-threatening emerging infectious diseases, neglected tropical diseases, infections that frequently occur as co-infections in HIV infected individuals or infections associated with non-communicable disease conditions of public health importance in LMICs.

The objectives of the Global Infectious Disease Research Training program are:

- To develop research training and career development programs for multiple LMIC scientists and health research professionals to strengthen the capacity to conduct independent, sustainable infectious disease research at a LMIC institutions.
- To provide mentored training-related research experience that is directly relevant to the health priorities of the LMIC.
- To strengthen the capabilities of trainees at LMIC institutions to lead, manage and train students in research

Award Budget

Applications budgets are limited to $200,000 per year for new award

Stipends, Tuition, and Fees

Awards provide stipends as a subsistence allowance to help defray living expenses during the research training experience and contribute to the combined cost of tuition and fees at U.S. or foreign institutions. Trainees may be paid a stipend comparable to their professional experience.

Individuals designing, directing, and implementing the program may request salary and fringe benefits appropriate for the person months devoted to the program. Salaries requested may not exceed the levels commensurate with the institution's policy for similar positions and may not exceed the U.S. Congressionally mandated cap. 

Faculty mentors and other collaborating key personnel may receive appropriate compensation for their significant activities on the program, such as recruitment and selection activities, as well as other program-related roles. The administrative, training or teaching responsibilities and time commitment for personnel receiving salary should be thoroughly described. The salary and fringe benefits requested for faculty and staff should not exceed 25 percent of total costs.  If mentoring interactions and other activities with trainees are considered a regular part of an individual's academic duties, then mentoring and other interactions with scholars are non-reimbursable from grant funds.

International Bioethics Research Training Program (D43) PAR-16-082


This program supports mentored doctoral and long term postdoctoral research training for ethics experts from low and middle income countries (LMICs). The overall goal of this initiative is to support the development of a sustainable critical mass of bioethics scholars in LMIC research institutions with the capabilities to conduct original empirical or conceptual ethics research. Such research should address challenging issues in health research and research policy in these countries as well as provide ethics leadership to their institutions, governments and international research organizations. The Fogarty International Center will support LMIC-U.S. collaborative institutional bioethics doctoral and postdoctoral research training programs that incorporate didactic, mentored research and career development components to prepare a number of individuals with ethics expertise for positions of scholarship and leadership in health research institutions in the LMIC.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Program faculty should have strong records as bioethics researchers, including recent publications and successful competition for support in bioethics research or training. Program faculty should also have a record of bioethics research training, including successful, former trainees who have established productive careers in international bioethics leadership positions.
  • All trainees must be citizens of LMICs (this includes Thailand).
  • Individuals who also have citizenship or permanent residency in the US, other high income countries, or countries not eligible under the Country Eligibility are not eligible for support under this FOA.
  • All trainees are required to pursue their research training full time, normally defined as 40 hours per week, or as specified by the sponsoring institution in accordance with its own policies.
  •  Postdoctoral trainees must have received a Ph.D., M.D., or comparable doctoral degree from an accredited institution. Preferably, postdoctoral trainees should have faculty positions at the LMIC institution. Only long term postdoctoral bioethics research training of at least one year can be supported.

  • Program Faculty: Faculty and mentors from LMICs with research ethics expertise should be included in significant roles in the proposed education programs. Faculty and mentors should have research ethics expertise and international experience relevant to the proposed program, including but not limited to expertise in the philosophical foundations of bioethics, behavioral or social science or other empirical methods in empirical bioethics investigation, global health policy or legal analysis and scholarship, and ethics of medical care. Mentors must be committed to continue their involvement throughout the total period of the mentee’s participation in this award.
  • Participants
    Only individuals who are citizens of LMICs are eligible for training support or other training activities proposed.

Program Overview

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The goal of this FIC R25 program is to support educational activities that foster a better understanding of biomedical, behavioral and clinical research and its implications, by strengthening research ethics capacity in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) through increasing the number of LMIC research intensive institutions that can provide advanced education in research ethics. 
  • Programs supported by this initiative will equip scientists, health professionals and academics in these countries with in-depth knowledge of the ethical principles, processes and policies related to international clinical and public health research.
  • Programs should be designed to strengthen the critical competencies needed to provide research ethics education, ethical review leadership and expert consultation to LMIC researchers, their institutions, governments and international research organizations.
  • To accomplish the stated overarching goal, this FOA will support creative education activities with a primary focus on: Curriculum Development; Courses for Skills Development, including practicum experiences; and Mentoring Activities.
  • Applications should include collaborations between bioethics experts from LMIC, U.S. and other high income countries (HIC).

Environmental Exposures and Health: Exploration of Non-Traditional Settings, (R01)

This grant opportunity encourages interdisciplinary research aimed at promoting health, limiting symptoms and disease, and reducing health disparities in children and older adults living or spending time in non-traditional settings. These settings result in exposure to environmental pollutants and toxins that result in health risks, symptoms, and other health conditions/diseases including lower respiratory diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cardiovascular diseases. Risk identification and symptom management include prevention and behavior changes and actions to maintain health and prevent disease with an emphasis on the individual, family, and community which will advance nursing science. 


For purposes of this FOA, non-traditional settings, for children and older adults, include, but are not limited to places such as community centers, pre-school and non-traditional school environments (e.g., churches, daycare, home-based schools, dormitories, and alternative schools), child and older adult foster care facilities, older adult day care facilities, half-way homes,  assisted living and long-term care facilities.

NIH Technology-Based Interventions to Promote Engagement in Care and Treatment Adherence for Substance Abusing Populations with HIV (R01)

This grant seeks applications to test the utility and implementation of technological tools, including mobile devices, to promote engagement in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) care among substance abusing populations with HIV. Research projects may focus on (a) the use of technology to directly improve patient-level outcomes (i.e., adherence); (b) the capacity of HIV treatment providers and related service delivery organizations to adopt and integrate such technologies to promote HIV treatment outcomes; or (c) the use of technology to improve the organization and delivery of HIV treatment and services.

NIH Partnerships for Interventions to Treat Chronic, Persistent and Latent Infections (R21/R33)

This grant opportunity seeks to stimulate basic and early-stage translational research focused on development of novel intervention strategies to clear persistent, chronic or latent infectious agents from the host. Responsive applications will define and address a therapeutic need specific to a targeted pathogen.    


Examples of possible intervention strategies include, but are not limited to:
  • Targeting pathogen latency establishment and/or maintenance mechanisms;
  • Targeting mechanisms enabling pathogen evasion of host immune responses;
  • Enhancing pathogen susceptibility to existing interventions;
  • Modulation of pathogen-specific immune cells;
  • Restoration and/or enhancement of specific aspects of the immune system
  • Targeting of specific metabolic sub-populations responsible for chronic infections
  • Eliminating replication competent viral nucleic acids from infected cells
The grant is worth $275,000 for the first two years, and then an additional $300,000 per year for three years for a total of $1,175,000.

A letter of intent must be submitted by June 13, 2012.  The full application should be submitted by July 13, 2012.

NIH Partnerships for Development of Therapeutics and Diagnostics for Biodefense (R01)

This opportunity invites research applications for projects that support preclinical development of lead candidate therapeutics or diagnostics against NIAID Category A, B, or C priority agents. Applications must include a Product Development Strategy attachment and demonstrate substantive investment by at least one industrial participant.

NIH Limited Competition: International Research in Infectious Diseases, including AIDS (R01)

This limited competition funding opportunity announcement (FOA) issued by the NIAID encourages Research Grant (R01) applications from organizations/institutions in eligible foreign countries that propose research related to infectious diseases that are of interest to that country.


Studies may be proposed on any aspect of infectious diseases (except clinical trials), including but not limited to: the epidemiology, pathogenesis, immunopathogenesis of infectious diseases; epidemiologic studies to define the incidence, clinical presentations, and outcomes of diseases; identification of resistance patterns; characterization of susceptible cohorts for a particular pathogen; pilot and feasibility studies in preparation for larger studies.

Collaborative projects involving investigators and institutions from international sites and the U.S. are particularly encouraged; however, a US partner is not required.

Studies on Select Agent Research is NOT allowed (this includes melioidosis and brucellosis).

Budgets for direct costs of up to $125,000 per year and a project duration of up to five years may be requested for a maximum of $625,000 direct costs over a five-year project period.

NIH HIV Incidence Assays with Improved Specificity (R01)

This grant encourages applications from institutions/ organizations that propose to develop improved HIV Incidence Assays with increased specificity and reliability for distinguishing incident from chronic HIV infections, especially cost-effective assays and algorithms with improved specificity and reliability for determining HIV incidence.  Ideally, the assay would be accurate for diverse HIV-1 subtypes and could be performed in resource limited settings.

The R21 mechanism is intended to encourage new exploratory and developmental research projects

All subjects and disciplines are eligible, but the research must be high-risk, high-impact, and highly innovative.

For example, such projects could assess the feasibility of a novel area of investigation or a new experimental system that has the potential to enhance health-related research.  Another example could include the unique and innovative use of an existing methodology to explore a new scientific area. These studies may involve considerable risk but may lead to a breakthrough in a particular area, or to the development of novel techniques, agents, methodologies, models, or applications that could have a major impact on a field of biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research.

This grant aims to provide support for the development of broadly interdisciplinary training programs in global health directed towards encouraging innovation in products, processes, and policies.  Trainees should be at the postdoctoral level or have attained a terminal degree in their fields.  Training projects should identify critical health needs in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs) that can be addressed through Innovation, and carry out the scientific research necessary to develop, validate, and test their concepts. To increase the translation of research findings into realized health benefits, project design should include considerations of implementation appropriate to low resource settings in LMICs, particularly regarding increased effectiveness, affordability, accessibility, ease of use or delivery, and/or scalability.


The 3 goals of this grant are: 


1.  To expand the base of expertise needed and available to tackle the challenging problems of global health by developing trans-institutional, problem-solving based research training programs that will bring together trainees of widely diverse expertise to work together on research problems in Global Health.


2. To stimulate new knowledge, approaches, and solutions in global health.


3. To integrate global health research communities within and among institutions by building capacity at the institution(s) to support an interdisciplinary research training program in Global Health Innovation.


The application must include participation by at least three Schools, departments, or entities of distinct disciplines, either at the applicant institution or among a consortium.  Subspecialties within a field, such as Medicine, would not qualify as distinct disciplines, and three departments within one School are unlikely to meet this standard.


This grant is worth $350,000 in total costs per year over 5 years.  The deadline is 15 December 2011.

NIH/PEPFAR Collaboration for Advancing Implementation Science in Prevention of Maternal-Child HIV Transmission (PMTCT) (R01)

The NIH, in collaboration with the Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator, invites applications for implementation science projects that will inform the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) as they develop more efficient and cost-effective methods to deliver proven interventions for prevention of maternal-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) in PEPFAR priority countries.  In Southeast Asia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia are PEPFAR priority countries.


Globally, over 1,000 children are newly infected with HIV each day, the majority in sub-Saharan Africa; the primary mode of HIV acquisition for infants is through mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding.


Research topics may include:
      1.) Optimal ways to enhance identification of HIV-infected pregnant women
      2.) Community-based strategies effectively increase preventative MTCT (PMTCT) uptake and reduce stigma, 
      3.) Does family and male partner involvement to increase PMTCT uptake and successful completion of the cascade and how can family and male partner involvement in PMTCT be increased
      4.) In a variety of settings (urban, rural), what are barriers to and effective strategies for providing more complex antiretroviral prophylaxis regimens to HIV-infected women who do not qualify for ART at the present time?
      5.) What strategies are needed to optimize nutrition for the HIV-exposed infants and for their HIV-infected breastfeeding mothers?

NIH Research Project Grant (Parent R01)

The Research Project Grant (R01) is an award made to an institution/organization to support a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by the named investigator(s) in areas representing the specific interests and competencies of the investigator(s). The R01 research plan proposed by the applicant institution/organization must be related to the stated program interests of one or more of the NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) based on descriptions of their programs (contact the Faculty of Tropical Medicine Office of Research Services for assistance identifying which IC to apply to).

The funding is for 3-5 years and the budget depends on the scope of the project.

NIH Research to Advance Vaccine Safety (R01 or R21)

The grant supports research that will contribute to the overall understanding of vaccine safetyThis research opportunity invites studies that address scientific areas potentially relevant to vaccine safety such as: 
1) physiological and immunological responses to vaccines and vaccine components,
2) how genetic variations affect immune/physiological responses that may impact vaccine safety, 
3) identification of risk factors and biological markers that may be used to assess whether there is a relationship between certain diseases or disorders and licensed vaccines, or 
4) the application of genomic/molecular technologies to improve knowledge of vaccine safety
