Applications have opened for the US Department of Defense
Peer Reviewed Medical Discovery Award Grants. These grants are tailored to ‘innovative, untested, high-risk’
research proposals, and aim to provide ‘robust preliminary data’ that can be used in further
research. Research must be centered on at least one of 25 topic areas, including
malaria.
Although the inclusion of preliminary data in applications
is strongly discouraged, the application should include a well formulated,
testable hypothesis based on a sound scientific rationale and study design. The
grants cannot be used for clinical trials, although clinical research is
permitted.
Duration
and funding:
Projects can run for a maximum of 18 months, although can
be shorter than this. The maximum budget is US $200,000, with additional allowances
for indirect costs and travel. The total program funding is 12 million US
dollars.
Applications will close on July 30th, 2014. The announcements will
be made by September 30th, 2015.
