Country Partner Technical Program – 2012 Project Grants *Applications Now Open*

APMEN is seeking applications for small to midsize P. vivax malaria projects focusing on diagnostics and surveillance or treatment trials. Projects must be from one of the 13 APMEN countries, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Republic of Korea, the Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vanuatu and Vietnam.
Closing date for proposals: 23 September 2012
The thematic areas for this round are:
  • Diagnostics and Surveillance
  • Treatment trials for P. vivax
Further details on these thematic areas are provided in the Guidelines (below).

Project proposals:
  • Can be submitted from individual or organisations from any of the countries listed above
  • Must be endorsed by their respective country’s National Malaria Control Program
  • Must be completed by the end of 2013
  • Should be developed in line with the criteria listed in the Guidelines for applicants

Gates' Grand Challenges (Canada): Stars in Global Health

PROGRAM INFORMATION
This unique program enables innovators in low- and lower-middle-income countries and Canada to develop their bold idea with big impact to improve global health conditions.
We are seeking ideas that reflect the full spectrum of global health including drug discovery, medical devices and diagnostics, vaccine development, health and medical education, maternal and child health, non-communicable diseases (including mental health and cancer), information communication technologies, health-related water and sanitation, and agriculture.
Awards are initially valued at $100,000 CAD for up to 12-18 months to demonstrate proof-of-concept of the idea. Upon successful review of proposals at 12-18 months after the initial award is granted, scale-up grants of up to $1 million CAD may be awarded with potential linkages to private sector investments.
We are looking for innovative ideas to address complex real-world challenges that involve a scientific or technological solution (new or existing) alone or in combination with social and/or business innovations. We call this approach Integrated Innovation.
From a Social Innovation perspective – are there social innovations (including health systems, the determinants of health, ethical/social/cultural/legal frameworks, public policies, leadership and human resources among others) that will be necessary to bring the scientific/technological solutions that are developed to scale in local communities in an appropriate manner?
From a Business Innovation perspective – are there appropriate business systems in place to produce and deliver the scientific/technological solution at an affordable pricepoint?

Please note that the closing date for applications for the APMEN 2012 Fellowship Program round has been extended from Friday August 24 until Friday September 7, 2012 to allow all intending applicants additional time to obtain endorsement from their National Malaria Control Program senior managers.  We would also like to remind potential applicants that applications can be submitted without identifying a Host Institution as the Secretariat and Fellowship Committee can assist in this process upon reviewing their proposal.

Objectives: APMEN Fellowships provide capacity building opportunities for short-term field work, professional development and advanced training in issues and techniques that are important to malaria elimination but not customarily available in the recipient’s home country.  The skills and knowledge acquired by the Fellow through the program will benefit the National Malaria Control Program of the Fellow’s home country through the sharing of their learning’s and new-found expertise.  Fellowships are also aimed to help promote cooperation and exchange of scientific knowledge relating to malaria elimination between APMEN Country Partners.  Fellows are expected to meet a high standard of performance and take independent initiative to engage with the resources available in the site of their Fellowship and with their host mentor.

About APMEN Fellowships: Up to 5 Fellowships will be awarded each year.  Fellows must be from an APMEN Country Partner (Thailand is eligible) and endorsed by their National Malaria Control Program.  Fellowships must be completed within a 1-3 month period.

The budget for each APMEN Fellowship recipient should not exceed AUD$17,000.  The APMEN Secretariat will source and directly cover travel, accommodation and visa costs, including the provision of a daily living allowance, based on WHO rates, for the duration of your APMEN Fellowship.  If the proposed Fellowship requires any additional funding for equipment/resources, this must be outlined in the application form.  A further $2,000 AUD is available to the host institutions for expenses incurred in relation to the Fellowship.  The Fellowship must be completed within one year of receiving the award.

The Fellowship topic must be relevant to the needs of the National Malaria Control Program of the applicant.  All Fellows are required to have a home mentor and a host mentor for the duration of their Fellowship.

Program Overview


This joint National Institutes of Health (NIH) - National Science Foundation (NSF) initiative supports efforts to understand the underlying ecological and biological mechanisms that govern relationships between human-induced environmental changes and the emergence and transmission of infectious diseases. The highly interdisciplinary research projects funded under this program apply both ecological and biomedical methods, and study how environmental events such as habitat alteration, biological invasion, climate change, and pollution alter the risks of emergence and transmission of viral, parasitic, and bacterial diseases in humans and other animals. Projects are encouraged to consider how integrated environmental and biomedical approaches to infectious diseases may enhance our ability to predict and control them.
Budget limitations: Beginning in FY2013, EEID projects must have a minimum budget of $1,000,000. Research that falls within the scope of the EEID initiative but with project aims that do not require a million dollar budget should be directed to either the Population and Community Ecology or Evolutionary Processes clusters in the Division of Environmental Biology.

BMGFAnnual Vaccine Innovation Award




Do you know someone who is improving vaccine delivery in the developing world? Now is the time to nominate that person or group of people for the second annual Gates Vaccine Innovation Award. Time is running out.
Deadline for nominations: 31 August 2012
The Gates Vaccine Innovation Award is open to individuals from any discipline who work on the delivery of vaccines. Candidates from academic institutions, governments, health care facilities, research institutions, non-profit organizations and for-profit companies may be nominated.
We are looking for ideas, big or small, that have resulted in tangible improvements in immunization coverage in developing countries.
We invite you to nominate individuals or groups of individuals who have achieved significant improvements in the prevention, control, or elimination of vaccine preventable diseases through immunization.
The winning nomination will be recognized with a $250,000 award 
Nominees will be assessed on three broad criteria:
  • Developing country impact – The nominee should have contributed to the prevention, control, or elimination of vaccine-preventable disease through significant improvements in immunization quality and coverage among mothers and children in developing countries.

  • Innovation and creativity – The nominee should have applied imaginative and pioneering approaches to overcome difficult challeges to immunizing children and achieving impact. Innovation is not the same asinvention. Even simple ideas applied in creative ways to overcome real-world challenges can be considered innovative.

  • Scale – The nominee’s innovation should be at scale or suitable to be implemented at scale within the nominee’s country and around the world.

Tips for Nominators
Following are some tips for those wishing to submit nominations:
  • Nominations must represent an innovative approach to vaccine delivery work that has demonstrated impact. Note: There are other avenues of funding for equally important research. See current Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation grant opportunities here.

  • Nominations will be reviewed by a panel with broad expertise and a track record in identifying innovations. These reviewers may not be deep experts in your field. Ideas should be described in clear language without the use of technical jargon unique to a particular field.

  • Documentation of the innovation does not need to be sent with the initial nomination form. However, credible evidence supporting the validity of a project or sufficient proof of innovation may be requested at a later date. We will need to contact the nominee prior to the prize being issued.

  • Nominators should review the policies, guidelines, terms, and conditions associated with this award.

Thanks to a new three-year grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Health Travel Awards will be available for five 2013 Keystone Symposia conferences (read more about this grant in this press release). The new grant will provide support for conferences in 2013, 2014 and 2015. It consists of $2.25 million in funding over three years – or $750,000 per year. The five 2012-2013 season Keystone Symposia conferences funded by the new grant are: “Malaria” in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA in January 2013; “HIV Vaccines” in Keystone, Colorado, USA in February 2013; “Tuberculosis: Understanding the Enemy” in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada in March 2013; “Immune Activation in HIV Infection: Basic Mechanisms and Clinical Implications” in Breckenridge, Colorado, USA in April 2013 and “The Innate Immune Response in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease” in Ouro Preto, Brazil in May 2013. The latter will be the first conference for Keystone Symposia in Latin America.


More than half of the grant is used to fund Global Health Travel Awards for investigators, clinicians, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from developing countries where the health issues of the meeting topic are endemic. Without these awards, these individuals would not be able to attend the conferences and participate in the valuable knowledge-sharing and collaboration-building that result. To date, more than 1,100 individuals from at least 50 countries have participated in Keystone Symposia conferences as a result of Global Health Travel Awards.



A unique component of the Global Health Series meetings that the funding also supports is a pre-meeting workshop for Travel Awardees in which 3-4 speakers provide an overview of the field, its current status and primary challenges. This has proved enormously valuable to participants who may be more involved in field work and therefore not as close to the latest research.



The grant will also help fund some registration costs for local scientists, postdoctoral associates and students when the conferences are held in developing countries. This promotes sharing of the latest research advances with those on the frontlines of battling global health challenges. It also stimulates growth of the research enterprise in developing countries.

The AXA Research Fund encourages scientific research that would contribute to understanding and preventing environmental, life, and socio-economic risks. The Fund supports world class research in these areas by providing institutions with the means of attracting and retaining the leading scientists of today and of the next generation. The Fund seeks to support innovative and cutting-edge transdisciplinary projects; particularly as such projects may encounter difficulties in gaining support elsewhere.

Call for Nominations: The Faculty of Tropical Medicine can submit only one (1)Postdoctoral Fellowship Nomination. If there is more than one nomination, we must select the best one to forward to AXA. We are therefore now calling for nominations by members of the Faculty for Postdoctoral Fellows who meet the selection criteria.

Eligibility: Members of the Faculty should ONLY nominate candidates who are citizens of one of the EU member states (see http://www.eucountrylist.com/), or one of the EU-FP7 countries: i.e. Switzerland, Israel, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Turkey, Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Serbia, Albania and Montenegro), or, in Asia (Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, India), or, in Latin America (Brazil and Mexico). Nominees must apply to undertake their postdoctoral fellowship program at the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University.

The 2nd round aims to select a PostDoctoral candidate according to the following criteria:

• International reach/International scope of the host laboratory
• International mobility (valued but not required)
• Application should be submitted within the 5 years following the Ph.D/Thesis (valued but not required)
