“OMICS” Technologies for Predictive Modeling of Infectious Diseases (U19)

Purpose: The purpose of this FOA is to develop and validate predictive models of infectious disease initiation, progression and outcomes. These models will be derived from the study of the architecture and dynamics of systems-wide host/pathogen molecular interaction networks during infection, using integrated datasets generated from a combination of “OMICS” technologies.

Budget: $US13 million in 2013 for 4 awards. The $ value of each award is not fixed, and will reflect the actual project scope, duration, and justified costs.

Funding period: 5 years

NIH Parent Grants (R01, R21, R03)

The NIH Parent Grants are awards made to an institution/organization to support a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by the named investigator(s) in areas representing the specific interests of the investigator(s). The research plan proposed by the applicant institution/organization must be related to the stated program interests of one or more of the NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) based on descriptions of their programs (contact the Faculty of Tropical Medicine Office of Research Services for assistance identifying which IC to apply to).


There are three mechanisms that you can apply through:


R01: for studies based on a lot of preliminary research; no limit on budget; up to 5-year project period
R21: for exploratory/developmental projects; budget limited at $275,000, 2-year project period
R03: for small projects or feasibility studies; budget limited at $100,000, 2-year project period


Young/new investigators are especially encouraged to apply!


Next deadlines for application submissions: R01 - 5 October 2012;  R03 and R21 - 16 October 2012

AXA Research Fund

 Do you need a high-quality, funded, Post-doctoral Research Fellow in your Department or Center?

Objective: The AXA Research Fund encourages scientific research that would contribute to understanding and preventing environmental, life, and socio-economic risks. The Fund supports world class research in these areas by providing institutions with the means of attracting and retaining the leading scientists of today and of the next generation. The Fund seeks to support innovative and cutting-edge transdisciplinary projects; particularly as such projects may encounter difficulties in gaining support elsewhere.

Eligibility: Candidates must be citizens of one of the EU member states, or one of the EU-FP7 countries: i.e. Switzerland, Israel, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Turkey, Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Serbia, Albania and Montenegro), or, in Asia (Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, India), or, in Latin America (Brazil and Mexico).

Applicants must apply to undertake their post-doctoral fellowship program at the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University.

Grant: a maximum of €120,000 over 24 months

1st round: Institutions to post their intention to participate in the campaign

·         Results Announced: June 28th, 2012

2nd round: Institutions to propose candidates
Step 1: Opening: June 28th, 2012
·         Closing: September 13th, 2012
Step 2: Candidates to submit their applications
·         Opening: September 13th, 2012
·         Closing: October 4th, 2012
·         Results Published: December 21st, 2012.
