Wellcome Trust - Collaborative Awards in Science

Collaborative Awards promote the development of new ideas and speed the pace of discovery. The Trust funds teams of researchers, consisting of independent research groups, to work together on the most important scientific problems that can only be solved through collaborative efforts.

Collaborative Awards are for teams of researchers bringing together the relevant expertise and experience to address the most important scientific problems.

Your proposal should describe a significant piece of work that addresses the most important questions, in an area relevant to the mission of the Wellcome Trust.

You should be able to demonstrate why the scientific problem you are tackling can only be solved through an integrated, collaborative team effort.

Each applicant must be essential to the proposed collaborative research and have:

• Proven research expertise and experience in their field.
• An academic or research post (or equivalent).
• A salary for the duration of the award period. 

Members of the team must have proven experience in collaborative research and consist of independent research groups.

Team size will depend on the proposed research, but should generally have more than two applicants, and no more than seven. Teams may be based in the same or in different organisations, and must bring different expertise or disciplines to the research question.


Eligibility - Applicants should be based at eligible organisations in the UK, Republic of Ireland, or low- or middle-income countries ( this includes Thailand).

Budget available - up to £4 million

Duration - up to 5 years

AHRC-MRC Global Public Health: Partnership Awards Call 2

The overarching driver of this partnership building activity is to develop inter-disciplinary research capacity and capability in both the UK and developing countries, jointly and collaboratively and across career stages. The aim is to generate reciprocal benefits through integrating an understanding of cultures and histories into medical and public health challenges in a global context and to equip the next generation of researchers to work collaboratively and blend scientific, cultural and policy research.

In order not to limit the potential for inter-disciplinary innovation under this call the call is open to proposals addressing any global public health issue affecting low and middle countries.


The following activities are permissible under this partnership grant scheme:

• Establishing inter-disciplinary collaborative partnerships or consortia
• Developing strategy to strengthen research activity across the field
• Knowledge sharing across research departments and/or between institutions and across sectoral boundaries both within the UK and with LMIC based colleagues.
• Small scale/pilot/proof of principle/exploratory/ higher risk inter-disciplinary projects to explore innovative boundary crossing collaborations
• Cross-disciplinary (and cross-cultural / language) literature reviews/ research synthesis/ evidence analysis or integrative data sharing and analysis,
• Widening/ extending the disciplinary breadth of existing teams / partnerships (e.g. through placements, embedding, ethnographic research)
• Career development, inter-disciplinary skills enhancement and capacity building.
• Establishing shared infrastructure, for example, staff, systems, equipment, data, seminars, workshops.  This could include a co-ordinated set of needs-led and complimentary networking activities (including outreach work and travel) with a defined output.

Eligibility: a UK university will be the applicant but they must partner with an LMIC institution ( Low and middle income country, this includes Thailand)  

Budget: Applicants may request up to 200,000 GBP   

Duration: The maximum project period is 2 years.

Newton Mobility Grants

Aims

This scheme aims to help strengthen the research and innovation capacity of researchers from partner countries ( Thailand is a partner) by assisting them in visiting or sending staff and students to the UK.

 In the UK they can develop networks, research projects and partnerships with their UK hosts and the wider UK research and innovation community.

The scheme is intended to stimulate new collaborations between scientists in the UK and overseas partner countries which result in the transfer of knowledge and help strengthen research capabilities between partners, and contribute to promoting economic development and social welfare in the overseas country.

The awards will also initiate the development of longer-term links between the overseas and UK researchers.

Subjects

Natural sciences, including biology and bio-medical research, excluding clinical or patient orientated research

Eligibility

Must have a PhD or equivalent research experience and hold an employment contract with a university or research institute.

Deadline for applications

 2nd March, 2016 and 10^th June 2016

Funding available

3000 GBP for up to 3 months, 6000 GBP for 1 year and 12000 for 2 years ( plus the OEHC in Thailand will provide additional funds)
