Malaria Experimental Genetics short course

This course is going to be held from the 15th to the 20th of March, 2015. It will be a Laboratory based advanced skills course, giving participants a working knowledge in Plasmodium experimental genetic techniques.  The course is being organised by the Wellcome Trust, and will take place at The Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University. 

The course will work with both P. falciparum and P. knowlesi, in addition to the rodent model P. berghei The practical work will teach participants fundamental technologies such as transfection, genotyping and phenotyping by flow cytometry and microscopy, and will also include cutting-edge technological approaches such as using next generation sequencing to simultaneously phenotype multiple strains in parallel.

The course is aimed at young researchers and new post-doc students, registration is free and travel bursaries are available. The course will be delivered by 3 researchers from the US and UK, in addition to guest speakers from Singapore.

NIH Grant opportunity - Innovative Technologies for Differential Diagnosis of Acute Febrile Illnesses (R21/R33)

NIH has published a call for applications for a new R21/R33 grant titled Innovative Technologies for Differential Diagnosis of Acute Febrile Illnesses (RFA-AI-14-062). For full RFA click here

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to solicit applications for early-stage translational research projects focused on the development of innovative, unbiased next generation, differential diagnostic technologies for acute febrile illnesses caused by infectious pathogens, excluding HIV.

Award budget:
Support for the R21 phase is limited to $275,000 in direct costs over the R21 two-year project period, with a maximum of $200,000 in direct costs allowed in any single year. The R33 award phase is limited to $300,000 in direct costs per year.

Research Objectives and Scope
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will provide support for research projects to establish proof-of-concept for novel, rapid and innovative medical diagnostic technologies and/or early-stage product development activities. The primary goal of such a diagnostic is to initiate appropriate therapeutic treatment during the initial visit for patients presenting acute fever in any point-of-care setting.

Research objectives may include the initial development of a novel technology or adaptation of an emerging technology to detect pathogens associated with acute febrile illnesses. Detection of host factors that would provide a differential diagnosis of bacterial infection that may provide clinically actionable information may also be included. A principal objective of this FOA is the development of innovative and novel diagnostic technologies. The following research areas are of particular interest:

  • Technologies that analyze clinical samples more accurately and rapidly than current diagnostic platforms and have utility within, or provide improvements upon, current clinical care and treatment.
  • Technologies capable of measuring in vivo analytes.
  • Integrated sample-to-answer sequencing-based platforms.
  • Diagnostic platforms that simultaneously detect multiple biomarkers.

For this FOA, the proposed diagnostic must be incubation-independent (i.e. designed to detect pathogens without requiring culture-bottle and/or streak plate incubations). Assays that can distinguish simultaneously between classes of pathogens (e.g. bacterial versus viral) are encouraged. At the end of the project period, a successful project will have demonstrated proof of principle with the capability of the developed technology to detect targeted pathogens in relevant live animal infection models (for in vivo detection technologies) or human clinical samples.

For the purpose of this FOA, the following features are of greatest importance for a proposed diagnostic:
  • Rapid: a target diagnostic test time of <1 hour to final result, including time required for clinical sample processing (if appropriate).
  • Culture independent: the diagnostic should focus on direct detection of pathogens or other biomarkers from human clinical samples.
  • Sensitive: the sensitivity should be equivalent to or exceed that of FDA-cleared diagnostics for proposed agent(s) from the same sample type.
  • Specific: the specificity should be equivalent to or exceed that of FDA-cleared diagnostics for proposed agent(s) from the same sample type.
  • Easy to use: for example, an integrated, closed sample-to-answer system with automated data analyses and/or result presentation and with minimal operator training and expertise required.
  • Cost-effective: projected production and operating costs should be as inexpensive as possible.

Medicines for Malaria Ventures Call for Proposal

The goal of this MMV 12th call for proposals is to encourage investigators to follow up on malaria box open source information, available on ChEMBL (https://www.ebi.ac.uk/chembl/malaria/),  and test the malaria box compounds and their derivatives in vivo using animal models of neglected infectious diseases.

Budget: USD 100,000
Project length: 12 months

Investigators and/or co-investigators from malaria endemic areas are highly encouraged to apply and their applications will be prioritized over applications from non-malaria endemic countries.  This call for applications is to encourage animal model testing of the malaria box hit compounds and their derivatives in neglected infectious disease models, such as schistosomiasis, cryptosporidiosis, filariasis, tuberculosis, as well as other infections where there is co-morbidity in children with malaria.

These Challenge Grants will be prioritized based on scientific merit. They should propose in vivo (animal) studies on neglected infectious diseases that afflict children in malaria endemic countries.  They will also consider applications that propose to study malaria in animal models with the malaria box compounds or new compound series with novel anti-malarial compounds. Please note that for malaria studies, in vivo studies that address transmission blocking and liver stage malaria will be prioritized over in vivo studies that address only the asexual blood stages of malaria.  


Proposals are expected to be at the stage where initial leads are identified against neglected disease pathogens, such that they have in vitro data supporting the efficacy of the compound(s) against neglected diseases, that demonstrate lack of toxicity against mammalian cells, and have pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters compatible with efficacious exposure. Please note MMV has data on PK exposure after oral dosing of mice with majority of malaria box compounds. This information is being prepared for open access release in the near future.  If that information would be helpful for your application, please write vanvoorhisw@mmv.org for release of that information for up to ten malaria box compounds. 
The proposed project should facilitate further development of the compounds and develop proof-of-concept information, such that further funding can be obtained.  

They anticipate funding up to 5 projects that could begin as early as December 2014, depending on completion of a contract.  Funding is to last no more than a year.

The Swiss Federal Institute for Technology, Zurich has announced a call for pilot activities to promote and establish links with Asia-Pacific countries, with the following objectives:

RFA-HD-15-017: Increasing Access and Uptake of HIV Testing and Counseling (HTC) and Appropriate HIV-related Services for Adolescents in Low and Middle-income Countries (R01)

NIH Has announced a new R01 funding opportunity for HIV-related services for adolescents in Low and Middle-income Countries.

The purpose of this RFA is to find ways to improve acceptability, uptake and effectiveness of HTC services and linkages to HIV prevention, treatment and care services among adolescents in Low and Middle-income Countries. 

Major objectives include:

Improve HTC utilization for adolescents most at risk for HIV infection and linkages to appropriate follow-up services in low and middle-income countries
  • Studies utilizing age-appropriate approaches and strategies to optimize outreach to adolescents in order to improve their access to HTC and care in different settings.
  • Mechanisms to strengthen health systems which promote uptake of HTC in family planning, reproductive health and school health settings and linkages to appropriate HIV follow-up services.
  • Feasibility, acceptability, ethics, effectiveness of school-based and self-testing and linkage to follow up services.
  • Identification of effective strategies for implementation/dissemination of testing and linkage to care into community clinics/settings.

Effective approaches to link and retain adolescents in treatment, care and support from HTC in low and middle-income countries
  • Studies exploring barriers to and/or factors enhancing testing and follow up treatment and care, and comparative effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of interventions to improve linkage to HIV treatment and care from HTC in different settings for adolescents most at risk for HIV infection.
  • Interventions to enhance outcomes in adolescents living with HIV at all points along the treatment and care continuum, including linkage to and retention in primary HIV medical care, initiation of and adherence to ART and achievement of durable HIV viral suppression, and transition of care.

Evaluate interventions that will help HIV-uninfected adolescents, particularly adolescent girls, in low and middle-income countries minimize risk and maintain their uninfected status
  •  Analysis of the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of combination approaches and strategies targeting adolescent girls in order to reduce their vulnerability and improve their access to HTC and linkage to effective HIV prevention.
  • Studies exploring the relationship between perceived and actual levels of risk for HIV and frequency of HIV testing that are unique to youth and which could inform downstream prevention interventions.
  • Innovative uses of new technologies to increase girls’ and other key affected adolescent populations’ access to and uptake of HTC and subsequent utilization of HIV prevention and/or treatment services.

NIH Grant: Mobile Health: Technology and Outcomes in Low and Middle Income Countries (mHealth)

Mobile Health: Technology and Outcomes in Low and Middle Income Countries will support research on the development or adaptation of mobile health (mHealth) technology specifically suited for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and the health-related outcomes associated with implementation of the technology.

The program aims to contribute to the evidence base for the use of mobile technology to improve clinical outcomes and public health while building research capacity in LMICs and establishing research networks in this area. In the context of this program, mHealth includes the use of mobile and wireless devices (cell phones, tablets, etc.) to improve health outcomes, health care services and health research. The mHealth technology that is developed or adapted in proposed projects can include external hardware and/or software components for mobile or wireless devices.

Of highest interest are well-designed multidisciplinary projects that focus on tools or interventions for chronic diseases or technology for disease agnostic and/or crosscutting applications. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) Grand Challenges: New Grant Opportunities

BMGF has announced new grant opportunities for their Grand Challenges Programme. Details about the most relevant one for FTM researchers can be found below, and you can go to their homepage for a list of all open opportunities.

New Interventions for Global Health:

This opportunity focuses on innovative concepts for vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics with the potential to be translated into safe, effective, affordable, and widely utilized interventions to protect against the acquisition, progression, or transmission of infectious diseases, or to provide a cure for infectious diseases, in resource‐limited settings.

This request for proposals will fund full awards that could include grants, program related investments, or contracts up to USD $10,000,000 per awardee for up to four years. Full awards must include an industry, biotech, or other translational partner, either leading or participating in the application. We will also consider applications for pilot awards of up to USD $2,000,000 and up to four years to explore concepts that require additional investigation, with the anticipation that successful applicants will apply for a full award in subsequent years. Pilot awards do not include a requirement for a biotech or translation partner, but such partnerships would still be welcome.

AXA Research fund - Young Research Fellowships (Post Doc)

AXA Research fund has announced that their Young Research Fellowships (Post Docs) opens this October.

AXA is an insurance company, and this funding aims to fund basic research dedicated to better understand important hazards, risks and threats within three areas - socioeconomic risks, environmental risks, and life risks.

Life risks includes (but is not limited to):

  • Aging/long term care, trends in individual longevity, age-related diseases, demographics
  • Bio medical risks, evolution of infectious diseases and pandemics, exposure to new technologies
  • Addictions and risky behaviors, psychology, biology, medicine
Eligibility: Young Research Fellowships are open PhD graduates that have obtained their degree within the last 5 years.

  • Maximum project length: 2 years
  • Funding limit: 120,000EUR total

Application Procedure:

  1. Application for this program must be done by the institution, who nominates up to 4 researchers. The deadline for this nomination step is November 8, 2014
  2. Once the institution has put forward the nominees, the applicant must submit an application form online - CV and extended synopsis of the proposal. The deadline for this step is December 15, 2014.
  3. Successful applicants are then contacted, and asked to submit a full proposal. Deadline: March 19, 2015

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation: GRAND CHALLENGES EXPLORATIONS

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has just released a call for applications for the 14th round of Grand Challenges Explorations grants. Grand Challenges Explorations seeks innovative global health and development solutions. Applicants can be at any experience level; in any discipline; and from any organization.

Two-page proposals can be submitted online until November 12, 2014.

Initial grants are on USD 100,000, and projects showing promise can receive additional funding up to USD 1 million.

The applications should be on one of the following six topics:

-    Surveillance Tools, Diagnostics and an Artificial Diet to Support New Approaches to Vector Control.

NIH-NSF Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases Program: A Joint Program for Multidisciplinary Research

The Fogarty International Center, in association with other institutes, have identified ecological and evolutionary sciences as essential to understanding many infectious diseases.

This program is designed to support mutli-disciplinary teams from low or middle income countries discover the principles governing the transmission of infectious diseases between humans and their hosts. The goal is to better understand and predict transmission of diseases.

Proposed projects should include aspects from various disciplines such as data modeling, bioinformatics, genomics, sociology, and economics; in addition to the relevant scientific fields regarding pathogen, vector and host species.

The award funding is still subject to availability, but will be up to 2.5 million dollars overall for direct and indirect costs over 5 years. Components of the NIH will be able to award up to 350,000 dollars for direct costs per annum, lasting up to 5 years.

URBAN RESILIENCE COMPETITION: RECOGNIZING INNOVATIONS THAT BUILD URBAN RESILIENCE IN ASIA


USAID, United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and United Nations Global Pulse are hosting the Asia Urban Futures Workshop to bring the science and technology sectors together with the development community in a novel way to discuss the rising challenges and opportunities facing Asia as the result of rapid urbanization and climate change. The workshop supports partnerships between progressive city planners and development practitioners, who will highlight examples of positive actions already being taken, and technology leaders and innovators, who will present transformative approaches to increase urban adaptation and improve urban planning. Together with the Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network, the workshop organizers are launching an Urban Resilience Competition to recognize new and innovative approaches to building urban resilience particularly through broad partnerships that contribute to inclusive and pro-poor actions.
The primary objective of the Urban Resilience Competition is to showcase new and innovative work already being undertaken in the field of urban resilience that offers transformative solutions; combines multi-disciplinary perspectives; and builds partnerships in a bottom-up participatory manner of design and implementation. By highlighting key initiatives that take the principles of scaling up and inclusivity into account, we hope this work will serve as an inspiration for others in addressing common and persistent urban resilience challenges.
Three winners of the Urban Resilience Competition will be selected and will receive travel support to attend the Asia Urban Futures Workshop, and present their work in a panel discussion on urban resilience. In addition, the winning projects will be publicized broadly regionally and globally through press releases and social media posts by USAID and the UN agencies. Winners will also receive a social media guidance packet to help communicate their selection as a winner to their broader social media network.

We are seeking projects contributing to long-term urban resilience that have either recently piloted or been established within the past three years. Applications will be evaluated by a panel of judges, and the decision of the judges will be final .

  • Innovation- the ground-breaking nature of the activity, for instance, pioneering of new decision-making, planning or implementation methodologies
  • Sustainability and inclusion – including integration with government planning, bottom-up participatory approaches with community inclusion and contribution to long-term alleviation of vulnerability
  • Evidence based decision making – including use of futures analysis, scenario planning, or other robust analytical processes and sound data
  • Measurable impact and transformational results – as reflected by quantifiable project accomplishments in addressing one of the four thematic areas
  • Scope/potential for scalability

Eligibility

  • Applications from foreign organizations must be from institutions located in countries defined by The World Bank as low income, lower-middle income or upper-middle income. See The World Bank Country and Lending Groups to identify countries with low- or middle-income economies.
  • Applicants are encouraged to collaborate with Fogarty Research and Research Training programs, or with other NIH grantees working in the developing countries where trainees are recruited. Collaboration with partners (listed below) is also encouraged.

Award Project Period
The total project period for a new or renewal application submitted in response to this funding opportunity may not exceed 5 years.  

Award Budget
New education program applications may request a budget of up to $230,000 [about 7,130,000 Baht] direct costs per year, or $1,150,000 (about 35.65 million Baht) over 5 years).

Indirect Costs
Indirect Costs (also known as Facilities & Administrative [F&A] Costs) are reimbursed at 8% of modified total direct costs (MTDC) (exclusive of tuition and fees and expenditures for equipment), rather than on the basis of a negotiated rate agreement.

The purpose of the International Research Ethics Education and Curriculum Development Award is to develop master's level curricula and provide educational opportunities for developing country academics, researchers and health professionals in ethics related to performing research involving human subjects in international resource poor settings. The goal of this initiative is to increase the number of developing country scientists, health professionals and relevant academics with in-depth knowledge of the ethical considerations, concepts and applications in clinical and public health research. It is expected that such master's level training will enhance the career development of individuals from developing countries, as well as strengthen and sustain the capacity to support ethical clinical and public health research at their home institutions and countries.

NIH: Development of Novel Therapeutics for Select Anaerobic Protozoa (R21/R33)

NIH has announced a grant for the Development of Novel Therapeutics for Select Anaerobic Protozoa, an initiative that encourages the discovery, preclinical development and/or validation of novel interventions for the treatment of infectious diseases caused by select anaerobic protozoa (amebiasis, giardiasis, trichomoniasis and diseases caused by free-living amoebae).

Early stage translational and/or pre-clinical projects may include but are not limited to:
  • Identification of drug targets and drug candidates, including (where appropriate) drug targets and drug candidates that are effective against the cyst form of a pathogen.
  • Studies on the mechanism(s) of action and/or mechanism(s) of resistance that would promote the development of novel interventions.
  • Identification of drug candidates with a superior profile to existing therapies (for example, potency, safety, efficacy against resistant strains, parasiticidal activity).
  • Studies of novel formulations or drug combinations with a superior profile (as described above) to existing therapies.
  • Identification of drug candidates with broad spectrum activity against anaerobic protozoa.
  • Identification of mammalian host targets for the development of interventions.

The total project period for an application submitted in response to this FOA cannot exceed five years. Awards will support milestone-driven exploratory/feasibility “proof-of-concept” studies (two-year R21 phase), with possible rapid transition to expanded development (three-year R33 phase).

NIH Call for Applications – International Research Scientist Development Award (IRSDA) (K01) – PAR-13-072

NIH has announced a call for applications for an International Research Scientist Development Award, which aims to develop young researchers’ careers by providing them with research experience in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This award is only for U.S. citizens who hold a research or health-professional doctoral degree and have at least two years of research experience beyond their doctoral degree. This is an opportunity to invite U.S. colleagues to conduct collaborative projects at FTM, as 50% of the grant period must be spent in LMICs, and they must have both U.S. and LMIC mentors.

The objective of this award is to prepare qualified individuals for research careers that will have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) NIH invites K01 applications from biomedical, epidemiological, clinical, biostatistical, social and behavioral scientists in the formative stages of their research careers.

Program Overview
The International Research Scientist Development Award (IRSDA) provides support and protected time (three to five years) to advanced postdoctoral (at least two years beyond conferral of doctoral degree) U.S. research scientists for an intensive, mentored research career development experience leading to an independent research career focused on global health.

Funds:
NIH will contribute up to USD 75,000  per year towards the salary of the recipient, plus applicable fringe benefits.
NIH will contribute up to USD 30,000 per year toward research development costs of the recipient.
