Short deadline - Thrasher Research Fund - Early Career Awards

The purpose of this program is to encourage the development of medical research in child health by awarding small grants to new researchers, helping them gain a foothold in this important area. The goal is to fund applicants who will go on to be independent investigators.

The Fund is open to a wide variety of research topics. They do not focus on a particulate disease, but always deal directly with children's health.

In the Early Career Award Program, the Fund is particularly interested in applicants that show great potential to impact that field of children's health through medical research. Both an applicant's aptitude and inclination toward research are considered. The quality of the mentor and the mentoring relationship are also considered to be important predictors of success.

Each project needs to be under the guidance of a mentor. The qualifications and experience of the mentor will be considered in the evaluation of the application.

There are no restrictions with regard to citizenship. The Fund is open to applications from institutions both inside and outside the United States.

Eligibility - Post-doctoral researchers who received the doctoral level degree no more than three years prior to the date of submission of the Concept Paper.

Budget available - maximum of $25,000

Duration - up to two years

Emerging Global Leader Award (K43)

The Fogarty Emerging Global Leader Award provides research support and protected time to a research scientist from a low- or middle-income country (LMIC) with a junior faculty position at an LMIC academic or research institution.  This intensive, mentored research career development experience is expected to lead to an independently funded research career. The award will provide salary and research project support.  Awardees are expected to increase their capabilities in advanced research methodology, analysis and data management, research administrative skills, responsible conduct of research, scientific presentation, publication and grants writing. 

Eligibility 

You must - 

• be a researcher in a therapeutic or scientific area of health priority for Thailand 
• have a full-time role with the Faculty 
• not have residence or citizenship in the US or another high income country 
• have at least a Master's, PhD is much preferred 
• currently hold an academic junior (mid-level) faculty position or research scientist appointment 
• have ( or be able to get) a mentor in the US and one in Thailand 
• have not yet received independent grant funding 
• have a clear project idea
• demonstrate a commitment to a research career 

Duration 

Between 3 and 5 years 

Budget and support 

The award will  - 

• pay salary and fringe benefits up to $75,000/year. (The salary must be consistent with salaries actually provided by the institution from its own funds)
• contribute $30,000  per year toward the research development costs of the award recipient

Research development costs include, but are not limited to, supplies, equipment, technical personnel, tuition or registration fees for activities related to the proposed career development plan, fees for statistical and computational services, and travel to research sites, research meetings, or training
