The AXA Research Fund encourages scientific research that would contribute to understanding and preventing environmental, life, and socio-economic risks. The Fund supports world class research in these areas by providing institutions with the means of attracting and retaining the leading scientists of today and of the next generation. The Fund seeks to support innovative and cutting-edge transdisciplinary projects; particularly as such projects may encounter difficulties in gaining support elsewhere.

Call for Nominations: The Faculty of Tropical Medicine can submit only one (1) Postdoctoral Fellowship Nomination. If there is more than one nomination, we must select the best one to forward to AXA. We are therefore now calling for nominations by members of the Faculty for Postdoctoral Fellows who meet the selection criteria.

Eligibility: Members of the Faculty should ONLY nominate candidates who are citizens of one of the EU member states (see http://www.eucountrylist.com/), or one of the EU-FP7 countries: i.e. Switzerland, Israel, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Turkey, Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Serbia, Albania and Montenegro), or, in Asia (Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, India), or, in Latin America (Brazil and Mexico). Nominees must apply to undertake their postdoctoral fellowship program at the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University.

Timeline for Second Campaign, 2012

1st round: Institutions to post their intention to participate in the campaign

• Opening: May 29th, 2012
• Closing: June 21st, 2012
• Results Announced: June 28th, 2012
• Completed (one quota awarded)

2nd round: Institutions to propose candidates

Step 1: Opening: June 28th, 2012

The 2nd round aims to select a PostDoctoral candidate according to the following criteria:

• Academic excellence of the candidate

• Innovative nature and originality of the project

• Feasibility of the project (management, organization, budget)

• International reach/International scope of the host laboratory

• International mobility (valued but not required)

• Application should be submitted within the 5 years following the Ph.D/Thesis (valued but not required)

NIAID: “OMICS” Technologies for Predictive Modeling of Infectious Diseases (U19)

“OMICS” Technologies for Predictive Modeling of Infectious Diseases (U19)

Purpose: The purpose of this FOA is to develop and validate predictive models of infectious disease initiation, progression and outcomes. These models will be derived from the study of the architecture and dynamics of systems-wide host/pathogen molecular interaction networks during infection, using integrated datasets generated from a combination of “OMICS” technologies.

Budget: $US13 million in 2013 for 4 awards. The $ value of each award is not fixed, and will reflect the actual project scope, duration, and justified costs.

Funding period: 5 years

NIH Parent Grants (R01, R21, R03)

The NIH Parent Grants are awards made to an institution/organization to support a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by the named investigator(s) in areas representing the specific interests of the investigator(s). The research plan proposed by the applicant institution/organization must be related to the stated program interests of one or more of the NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) based on descriptions of their programs (contact the Faculty of Tropical Medicine Office of Research Services for assistance identifying which IC to apply to).


There are three mechanisms that you can apply through:


R01: for studies based on a lot of preliminary research; no limit on budget; up to 5-year project period
R21: for exploratory/developmental projects; budget limited at $275,000, 2-year project period
R03: for small projects or feasibility studies; budget limited at $100,000, 2-year project period


Young/new investigators are especially encouraged to apply!

NIH Exploratory/Developmental Clinical Research Grants in Obesity (R21)

This opportunity encourages research grant applications from institutions/organizations that propose to conduct exploratory/developmental clinical studies that will accelerate the development of effective interventions for prevention or treatment of overweight or obesity in adults and/or children. Exploratory epidemiological research with a goal of informing translational/clinical research will also be supported within this program.


The project period is up to 2 years and the budget is $275,000.  There will be regular deadlines until 8 May 2015.  The next deadlines are 16 June 2012 and 16 October 2012.

NIH Multidisciplinary Studies of HIV/AIDS and Aging (R01, R21, or R03))

This opportunity invites applications proposing to study HIV infection, HIV-associated conditions, HIV treatment, and/or biobehavioral or social factors associated with HIV/AIDS in the context of aging and/or in older adults. Research approaches of interest include clinical translational, observational, and intervention studies in domestic and international settings.

NIH Basic Research on HIV Persistence (R01 or R21)

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to increase our understanding of persistent HIV-1 infection in patients under highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART). Support would be through soliciting applications for hypothesis-driven basic research in HIV/AIDS that is focused on directly achieving this aim. The emphasis of this initiative is on the development of new ideas and approaches in HIV-1 persistence including model and assay development that may directly inform future studies on the design of therapeutic strategies to achieve long term remission without treatment or a complete eradication of residual virus and complete cure for HIV infection and AIDS.
