Grand Challenges Explorations Round 10 Now Open

Open to All Disciplines: Anyone Can Apply

The grant program is open to anyone from any discipline, from student to tenured professor, and from any organization – colleges and universities, government laboratories, research institutions, non-profit organizations and for-profit companies.

Agile, Accelerated Grant-Making

The initiative uses an agile, accelerated grant-making process with short two-page applications and no preliminary data required. Applications are submitted online, and winning grants are chosen approximately 4 months from the submission deadline. Initial grants of $100,000 are awarded two times a year. Successful projects have the opportunity to receive a follow-on grant of up to $1 million.

To get started, download and read the Rules and Guidelines document (PDF) . It contains detailed information on all aspects of Grand Challenges Explorations. You may need to download Adobe Reader to view PDF documents. Please also read the Terms and Conditions, and Privacy Policy. Any information submitted by you or on your behalf with respect to the Grand Challenges Explorations Initiative (including your proposal, reports, and any related documentation and communications) will be subject to and handled in accordance with the provisions in these three documents. Changes to the rules and guidelines will be posted on the Frequently Asked Questions page of this Web site. Please read the current FAQs before submitting any questions or concerns.

Step 2: Read The Topics


Topics are presented for each Grand Challenges Explorations round. Read the detailed information about GCE Topics on the Topics Overview page and then read the Topic Descriptions for this round to determine which topic best suits your idea.

Step 3: Download the Application Form


Please download the Application Form for specific instructions on the format and content of your application. Please note that some users may see a screen asking them to log in when opening the Application Form. This is an issue with some versions of Microsoft Office. Click Cancel and the Application Form will open for you. All proposals must be written in English.
Step 4: Create an Account, Register for a Topic, and Submit your ProposalYou may create an account using our online Explorations Application Tool.  This tool will enable you to register for an Explorations topic as well as create, edit, or submit your proposal.  After you have created an account and registered for a topic, you can start the online application process. All applications must be submitted through this online system.

Tips for Grant Seekers


Following are some tips for grant seekers wishing to submit proposals:
  • Proposals must represent an innovative approach responsive to the topic.  There are other avenues of funding for the equally important research that is within currently accepted paradigms.  Such work will not be funded under Grand Challenges Explorations. 
  • Proposals will be reviewed by a panel with broad expertise and a track record in identifying innovations – these reviewers may not be deep domain experts in your field.  Ideas should be described in clear language without the use of jargon unique to a particular field (see How Grants are Selected).
  • Proof-of-concept for ideas need not be completed in Phase I. However, credible evidence supporting the validity of an idea, sufficient proof to warrant expanded support, and next steps for the project should be provided.

NIH Grant: Immunity in the Elderly (R01) (RFA-AI-12-038)

Immunity in the Elderly
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the National Institute of Aging (NIA) invite applications to define the mechanisms for induction, development, and maintenance of protective immunity in the elderly in response to infections with or vaccinations against NIAID Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases

  The goal of this FOA is to develop a better understanding of the immune mechanisms involved during the aging process that contribute to impaired immune responses resulting in severe infections and dampened responses to vaccines in this population.  This FOA requires human studies, to gain insights into immune changes in elderly individuals.  Thus, at least one aim of the project must focus fully on human studies; appropriately justified animal work may be included in additional aims to conduct mechanistic studies that are not possible in humans.

Award Budget
Direct costs for each application are expected to be $300,000 or less per year, plus appropriate F&A costs. Budgets should be commensurate with the proposed studies and adequately justified.

Scope of the proposed project should determine the project period.  The maximum period is 5 years.

REMINDER: TDR Clinical Research & Development Fellowships

Applications must be received by 7th October 2012


Researchers from low and middle income countries (LMICs) are invited to apply for the fourth round of the WHO/TDR Career Development Fellowship (CDF) on clinical research & development (clinical R&D). Successful candidates will be placed with leading product development institutions, including pharmaceutical companies that are participating in the fellowship programme (“host institutions”). The goal is to develop human resources to promote high quality clinical R&D in LMICs. It is expected that qualified professionals will enhance LMICs’ product development capacity on diagnostics, drugs and vaccines for infectious diseases that disproportionately affect poor and marginalized populations.
The host institutions will train individuals in situ in order to develop specialized skills not readily taught in academic centres, including R&D project management, regulatory requirements and good health research practices. On returning to their home institutions, the fellows are expected to become an important resource for institutional capacity development to undertake and manage clinical research in accordance with international regulatory requirements and standards.

BMGF is requesting applications for projects that will help meet one, or both, of the following interrelated goals:

  1. To develop novel approaches to vaccination against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), with a particular focus on approaches that aim to induce protection against infection with Mtb.
  2. To develop models of natural Mtb transmission and methods for defining the relevant molecular and biological characteristics of naturally transmitted mycobacteria and of their interactions with vertebrate hosts

The prevention of tuberculosis (TB) through the development and deployment of an effective vaccine is a priority of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.  To strengthen the pipeline of vaccine candidates and enable a more rational and accelerated vaccine development process, the foundation, in collaboration with its Product Development Partner Aeras, recently launched the TB Vaccine Accelerator Program.  With the assistance and support of the TB research and development community, a set of obstacles to TB vaccine development—and integrated goals that, collectively, could help to directly understand, overcome or work around these obstacles—have been selected.  Through a research program focused on achieving this defined set of interdependent goals, the TB Vaccine Accelerator aims to address significant challenges in this field.  This Request for Applications (RFA) focuses on two of these goals.
