Partnerships for Development of Vaccine Technologies (R01)

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH), invites research applications for projects focused on preclinical development of candidate technologies (including adjuvants) that would improve vaccine effectiveness and/or simplify vaccine delivery to patient populations during a natural outbreak of an infectious disease or following the intentional release of an infectious agent. Applications must include a Product Development Strategy attachment and demonstrate substantive investment by at least one industrial participant.  

Letter of intent due date: May 26, 2012  

Award budget: Budgets for direct costs of up to $750,000 per year may be requested. In addition, applicants may request up to a total of $300,000 for major equipment in the first year of the award to ensure that research aims can be met and biohazards can be contained.

Scope of the proposed project should determine the project period. The maximum period is 5 years.

Resource Access for the Bridging Interventional Development Gaps Program (X01)

The high cost of translating therapeutic discoveries into clinically-available agents can deter the development of promising therapeutics. When private sector resources are limited, BrIDGs’ in-kind services could help researchers span the gap between the preclinical and clinical stages of therapy development and continue to evaluate agents that may improve the standard of care for patients with a variety of diseases and disorders. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to invite investigators to apply for access to government-funded contract resources needed for the preclinical development of therapeutic agents.

Applications are accepted for the development of the following therapeutic agents:

• Small molecules
• Peptides
• Oligonucleotides
• Gene vectors
• Recombinant proteins
• Monoclonal antibodies

Potential therapies for any disease or disorder may be submitted. Vaccines, devices and diagnostic agents are ineligible for the program. Only lead agents with demonstrated pharmacological activity in an appropriate disease model will be considered for development.

HIV Vaccine Research and Design (HIVRAD) Program (P01)

Support of multi-component, multi-disciplinary projects that address important scientific questions relevant to AIDS prophylactic vaccine discovery research.

The HIVRAD program is designed to fund projects that further address hypotheses crucial to the design of an efficacious HIV/AIDS prophylactic vaccine. Applications for five years of support should include plans that have advanced past the exploratory stage and include preliminary data. Less fully developed applications can request less than 5 years of support to establish feasibility. Applications aimed at developing or optimizing a specific vaccine platform should lay out a research pathway with clear decision points. Extensive modeling of vaccine concepts in non-human primates may be included.

Clinical studies involving human subjects or vaccine research focused solely on therapeutic applications are not considered appropriate and will not be funded under this FOA.

New Investigator Awards provide support that is flexible and at a level and length sufficient to enable exceptional researchers to address the most important questions about health and disease.

·         New Investigator Awards provide a flexible package of funding and may be for up to seven years

·       A New Investigator Award might be in the range of £100k to £425k per year. Please note that awards may not necessarily be made at the upper end of this range, and we expect costs to be suited to and justified by the proposed research.

Training Fellowships in Public Health and Tropical Medicine

This scheme provides researchers from low- and middle-income countries - who are at an early stage in the establishment of their research careers - with opportunities for research experience and high-quality research training in public health and tropical medicine.

Research projects should be aimed at understanding and controlling diseases (either human or animal) of relevance to local, national or global health. This can include laboratory-based molecular analysis of field or clinical samples, but projects focused solely on studies in vitro or using animal models will not normally be considered under this scheme.

This fellowship is normally for three years (non-renewable), but may be for up to four years for those who wish to undertake a relevant Master's training or diploma course.

Research-dedicated costs (excluding salary costs) should not normally exceed £30 000 per annum.

This scheme enables high-calibre, mid-career researchers from low- and middle-income countries to establish an independent research programme.

Research projects should be aimed at understanding and controlling diseases (either human or animal) of relevance to local, national or global health. This can include laboratory based molecular analysis of field or clinical samples, but projects focused solely on studies in vitro or using animal models will not normally be considered under this scheme.

Fellowships are for up to five years (non-renewable) and provide support that includes:

• a basic salary for the fellow 
• research expenses 
• training costs where appropriate and justified
• an inflation and flexible funding allowance
• support to attend scientific meetings

Research-dedicated costs (excluding salary costs) should not exceed £60,000 per annum.
