REMINDER: WHO Tropical Disease Clinical R&D Fellowships


TDR Clinical Research & Development Fellowships

Applications close 24 September 2012!!

Researchers from low and middle income countries (LMICs) are invited to apply for the fourth round of the WHO/TDR Career Development Fellowship (CDF) on clinical research & development.

Successful candidates will be placed with leading product development institutions, including pharmaceutical companies that are participating in the fellowship programme (“host institutions”). MMV is one of the host institutions.

The goal is to develop human resources to promote high quality clinical R&D in LMICs. It is expected that qualified professionals will enhance LMICs’ product development capacity on diagnostics, drugs and vaccines for infectious diseases that disproportionately affect poor and marginalized populations.

The host institutions will train individuals in situ in order to develop specialized skills not readily taught in academic centers, including R&D project management, regulatory requirements and good health research practices.

On returning to their home institutions, the Fellows are expected to become an important resource for institutional capacity development to undertake and manage clinical research in accordance with international regulatory requirements and standards.

BMGF is requesting applications for projects that will help meet one, or both, of the following interrelated goals:

  1. To develop novel approaches to vaccination against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), with a particular focus on approaches that aim to induce protection against infection with Mtb.
  2. To develop models of natural Mtb transmission and methods for defining the relevant molecular and biological characteristics of naturally transmitted mycobacteria and of their interactions with vertebrate hosts

The prevention of tuberculosis (TB) through the development and deployment of an effective vaccine is a priority of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.  To strengthen the pipeline of vaccine candidates and enable a more rational and accelerated vaccine development process, the foundation, in collaboration with its Product Development Partner Aeras, recently launched the TB Vaccine Accelerator Program.  With the assistance and support of the TB research and development community, a set of obstacles to TB vaccine development—and integrated goals that, collectively, could help to directly understand, overcome or work around these obstacles—have been selected.  Through a research program focused on achieving this defined set of interdependent goals, the TB Vaccine Accelerator aims to address significant challenges in this field.  This Request for Applications (RFA) focuses on two of these goals.

Eligibility

  • U.S. and low- and middle-income country (LMIC) institutions are eligible as applicants. LMICs are as defined by the World Bank classification system.
  • U.S. applicants are required to collaborate with named institutions or research entities in LMICs. LMIC applicants may come in independently, or choose to collaborate with U.S. or other LMIC partners.
  • Applications must include participation by at least three schools, departments, or entities of distinct disciplines, either at the applicant institution or among a consortium.
  • Institutions or consortia must participate, as a recipient or significant collaborator, in a minimum of five research or research training grants or research contracts in global health topics involving significant participation by investigators in LMICs.
  • Trainees must be citizens of the U.S. or an LMIC and have obtained a terminal degree in their fields (doctorate or other, as appropriate).

NEW: Clarification on number of applications per institution:
  • Each institution may submit only one application per application deadline as the applicant institution (the institution listed as the responsible administrating entity on the face page).
  • Amended applications that were not awarded in the first round may be resubmitted for the second application deadline on December 14, 2012, in addition to a new application from that institution.
  • Institutions may participate in more than one consortium in a given application round as an applicant institution and as a participating consortium partner on applications submitted by other institutions.

Program Overview

Framework Programs for Global Health Innovation (FRAME Innovation) will provide support to institutions in the U.S. and in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to build capacity within their institutions to develop broadly interdisciplinary, postdoctoral (or post-terminal degree) research training programs in global health directed towards encouraging innovation in health-related products, processes and policies. The program emphasizes hands-on, problem-solving, and collaborative approaches and allows U.S. and LMIC trainees to be trained together.
Interdisciplinary trainee teams should be challenged to identify critical health needs in LMICs that can be addressed through innovation, and carry out the underlying scientific research necessary to develop, validate, and test their concepts. To increase the potential for translation of research findings into realized health benefits, project design should include considerations of implementation appropriate to low resource settings in LMICs, particularly regarding increased effectiveness, affordability, accessibility, ease of use or delivery, and/or scalability.
By engaging multiple entities within and among institutions, proposed programs should also build institutional capacity for interdisciplinary research training in global health, stimulate new collaborations, and increase the pipeline of researchers from a wide variety of fields who engage in global health research.

Program Overview

This joint National Institutes of Health (NIH) - National Science Foundation (NSF) initiative supports efforts to understand the underlying ecological and biological mechanisms that govern relationships between human-induced environmental changes and the emergence and transmission of infectious diseases. The highly interdisciplinary research projects funded under this program apply both ecological and biomedical methods, and study how environmental events such as habitat alteration, biological invasion, climate change, and pollution alter the risks of emergence and transmission of viral, parasitic, and bacterial diseases in humans and other animals. Projects are encouraged to consider how integrated environmental and biomedical approaches to infectious diseases may enhance our ability to predict and control them.
Budget limitations: Beginning in FY2013, EEID projects must have a minimum budget of $1,000,000. Research that falls within the scope of the EEID initiative but with project aims that do not require a million dollar budget should be directed to either the Population and Community Ecology or Evolutionary Processes clusters in the Division of Environmental Biology.

Purpose
The John E. Fogarty International Center (FIC) intends to reissue Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) PAR-10-066. This FOA will encourage applications for the International Research Scientist Development Award (IRSDA) (K01) program. This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.  

The FOA is expected to be published in winter 2012 with an expected receipt date in spring 2013.

This FOA will utilize the K01 activity code.  Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details
This Notice encourages early-career investigators in biomedical, epidemiological, clinical, social and behavioral sciences to consider applying for this FOA to conduct career development activities and research in developing countries. The IRSDA seeks to foster research independence in global health through a period of mentored research and career development. The expectation is that through this sustained period of career development, awardees will launch independent global health research careers and become competitive for new research project grant (e.g., R01) funding and academic careers in global health.
