e-ASIA Joint Research Program (the e-ASIA JRP) Research Cooperation in the field of “Health Research” On the topic of “Infectious Diseases, Cancer”

The e-ASIA Joint Research Program (hereinafter referred to as the “e-ASIA JRP”) aims to develop a vibrant and collaborative research community in Science and Technology, to promote innovation in the East Asian region, and to contribute to the region’s economic development. As part of the program, the following Member Organizations of the e-ASIA JRP have agreed to implement a joint call for proposals of multilateral cooperative research activities.

Participating Member Organizations (listed in alphabetical order):

10) USA: National Cancer Institute (NCI)

A project consortium must be consisted of at least three eligible research teams from at least three different participating countries listed above. Each research team shall be led by a Principal Investigator (PI), and a consortium shall be led by a Lead Principal Investigator (Lead PI) specified among the PIs. 


Thailand: National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) 
I. Eligibility for Thai applicants The applicants must be researchers and/or university professors/instructors who work in public research institute or university in Thailand, and are competent in conducting a research with international partners. 

Thai researchers can apply for Cancer topics and Infectious Diseases except for HIV and AIDS.

II. Support   The total budget for the Thai researcher over a full 3-year period is up to                   5, 000,000 THB. The budget for a project may differ each year, depending on the content of activities.

III. Evaluation of Project Proposals Proposals will be peer-reviewed, and evaluated by a committee. The final selection will be done by the international selection committee of e-ASIA. 

III.I Evaluation Criteria To be funded, proposals must be internationally competitive. It should lead to the advancement of the research field, or novel applications or increased of research capacity. 

Key evaluation criteria are:

 Significance and impact of the research
 Scientific Rationale: novelty, importance and timeliness of the research 
 Design and feasibility of the project plan
 Partnership: including strength and clarity of collaborations and opportunities provided, quality of the project management structure proposed;
 Quality and suitability of the research environment and of the facilities;

 Ethical considerations and governance arrangements

National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) invites applications for research developing comparative approaches that can be used to understand genome structure and function and the relationship between genomic features and phenotypes. This program supports studies that enable the use of a diverse array of species to advance our ability to understand basic biological processes related to human health and disease, as well as studies that develop novel analytical tools and resources for the comparative genomics research community.

Specific areas of research interest:

NHGRI is interested in supporting development of comparative genomics methods and resources with strong justification of biological relevance, particularly relevance to human health and disease, that will enable areas of research including, but not limited to:

• Genome structure and organization across multiple species, particularly in lineages with diverse or unusual genomic architectures
• The relationship between genomic structure and function, especially in non-coding regions of the genome
• Evolutionary patterns and processes across multiple species including but not limited to divergent and convergent patterns of gene modification, gene regulation (including splicing), regulatory element activity, and regulatory networks
• Better understanding of the relationship between changes in DNA sequence, transcriptomic and epigenomic signatures, and phenotype/fitness, given that they do not always have simple correlations;
• The genetic underpinnings and evolution of health-related function in multiple species;
• The comparative population genomics of highly variable regions in multiple species;
• Integration of the genomes from ancient DNA and extant species to elucidate the genetic bases and evolutionary forces underlying speciation, adaptation to diverse environments, and the connections among genes, environments, and phenotypic form and function.

Wellcome Trust - Collaborative Awards in Science

Collaborative Awards promote the development of new ideas and speed the pace of discovery. The Trust funds teams of researchers, consisting of independent research groups, to work together on the most important scientific problems that can only be solved through collaborative efforts.

Collaborative Awards are for teams of researchers bringing together the relevant expertise and experience to address the most important scientific problems.

Your proposal should describe a significant piece of work that addresses the most important questions, in an area relevant to the mission of the Wellcome Trust.

You should be able to demonstrate why the scientific problem you are tackling can only be solved through an integrated, collaborative team effort.

Each applicant must be essential to the proposed collaborative research and have:

• Proven research expertise and experience in their field.
• An academic or research post (or equivalent).
• A salary for the duration of the award period. 

Members of the team must have proven experience in collaborative research and consist of independent research groups.

Team size will depend on the proposed research, but should generally have more than two applicants, and no more than seven. Teams may be based in the same or in different organisations, and must bring different expertise or disciplines to the research question.
