Program Overview


The overall goal of the Fogarty HIV Research Training Program is to strengthen the human capacity to contribute to the ability of institutions in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) to conduct HIV-related research on the evolving HIV-related epidemics in their country and to compete independently for research funding. With co-funding from other NIH Institutes, Centers and Offices, Fogarty has provided 25 years of support to HIV research through two HIV research training programs: the AIDS International Training and Research Program (AITRP) and the International Clinical, Operations and Health Services Research Training Award for AIDS TB program (ICOHRTA AIDS TB). Fogarty has consolidated these two programs into the new Fogarty HIV Research Training Program.
While the areas for training permitted under the new program will be broad - to include HIV-related research and selected critical research infrastructure areas - each application should focus on building or strengthening capacity in a particular scientific or critical research infrastructure area at a LMIC institution. Applicant organizations may submit more than one application, provided that each application is programmatically and scientifically distinct.
The new program will move beyond simple output indicators (number and type of people trained) to outcome indicators (increased research capacity at an institutional level) for more meaningful monitoring and evaluating both of individual awards and of the program as a whole. It is anticipated that this approach will allow applicants to be more responsive to an emerging need at an LMIC institution for research capacity, and will provide more opportunities for LMIC institutions to collaborate with NIH and other U.S. government funded efforts.

  • U.S. Institutions with a demonstrated collaboration with a researcher in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) institutions may apply.
  • Foreign institutions in LMICs may also apply.
  • Applicant institution must have robust and high-quality research ongoing in the area(s) proposed.
Eligibility: Planning Grant for Global Infectious Disease Research Training Program (D71)
  • Applicants may only be submitted by foreign institutions in LMICs, as defined by theWorld Bank Classification system.
  • Foreign applicants should apply in collaboration with U.S. institutions and must name an individual in the proposed institution as the major collaborator.
Applicant institutions for both the full institutional grant and the planning grant may submit more than one application, provided that each application is scientifically distinct.

Program Overview


The Global Infectious Disease (GID) program addresses research training needs related to infectious diseases that are predominantly endemic in or impact upon people living in developing countries. The training programs include a variety of research training options to match the needs of the developing country institution. The ultimate goal is to build a critical mass of researchers and support staff to conduct independent infectious disease research in developing country institutions.
Training programs may include:
  • Long-term (master's or doctoral degree and other training that is six months or longer) training for the full range of skills necessary to support research and research administration with the understanding that the focus of thesis and training-related research will be in their country.
  • Medium-term (three- to up to six-months) training or mentoring, including specialized clinical, laboratory, research or administrative/business skills necessary to support research that is planned or ongoing.
  • Short-term (less than three months) training or mentoring that focuses on research methodology, laboratory skills necessary to support research ethics and compliance issues, program and grants administration and financial management, grant writing, preparation of scientific manuscripts, data management, informatics, and other relevant areas.
  • Institutional capacity-building efforts such as in-country training workshops in advanced research techniques, distance learning and informatics.
  • Advanced in-country mentored research undertaken by the trainee in his/her home country upon completion of his/her initial period of long-term training under the program.

International Research Ethics Education and Curriculum Development Award (Bioethics) (R25) (PAR-13-027)


NIH are currently requesting applications for the International Research Ethics Education and Curriculum Development Award (Bioethics).

Award Budget

New education program applications may request a budget of up to $230,000 direct costs per year.
Renewal education  program applications may request a budget of up to $276,000 direct costs per year.

Award Project Period

The total project period for a new or renewal application submitted in response to this funding opportunity may not exceed 5 years.  

Eligibility
Applications from foreign organizations must be from institutions located in countries defined by The World Bank as low income, lower-middle income or upper-middle income. See The World Bank Country and Lending Groups to identify countries with low- or middle-income economies.

Applicants are encouraged to collaborate with Fogarty Research and Research Training programs, or with other NIH grantees working in the developing countries where trainees are recruited. Collaboration with partners (listed below) is also encouraged.

Program Overview

The purpose of the International Research Ethics Education and Curriculum Development Award is to develop master's level curricula and provide educational opportunities for developing country academics, researchers and health professionals in ethics related to performing research involving human subjects in international resource poor settings. The goal of this initiative is to increase the number of developing country scientists, health professionals and relevant academics with in-depth knowledge of the ethical considerations, concepts and applications in clinical and public health research. It is expected that such master's level training will enhance the career development of individuals from developing countries, as well as strengthen and sustain the capacity to support ethical clinical and public health research at their home institutions and countries.

Mobile Health: Technology and Outcomes in Low and Middle Income Countries (mHealth) (R21) (PAR-14-028)


This is a reminder that the deadline for the NIH R21 Grant for Mobile Health: Technology and Outcomes in Low and Middle Income Countries is approaching.

Eligibility

Applicants are required to propose partnerships between at least one U.S. institution and one LMIC institution (with LMIC defined by The World Bank as low-, lower-middle-, or upper-middle-income economies).
Program Directors/Principal Investigators may be employed in either a U.S. or LMIC institution, but should plan to build capacity in mHealth research in the LMIC institution(s).

Program Overview
Mobile Health: Technology and Outcomes in Low and Middle Income Countries will support research on the development or adaptation of mobile health (mHealth) technology specifically suited for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and the health-related outcomes associated with implementation of the technology.

The program aims to contribute to the evidence base for the use of mobile technology to improve clinical outcomes and public health while building research capacity in LMICs and establishing research networks in this area. In the context of this program, mHealth includes the use of mobile and wireless devices (cell phones, tablets, etc.) to improve health outcomes, health care services and health research. The mHealth technology that is developed or adapted in proposed projects can include external hardware and/or software components for mobile or wireless devices.

Of highest interest are well-designed multidisciplinary projects that focus on tools or interventions for chronic diseases or technology for disease agnostic and/or crosscutting applications. Malaria Experimental Genetics short course

This course is going to be held from the 15th to the 20th of March, 2015. It will be a Laboratory based advanced skills course, giving participants a working knowledge in Plasmodium experimental genetic techniques.  The course is being organised by the Wellcome Trust, and will take place at The Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University. 

The course will work with both P. falciparum and P. knowlesi, in addition to the rodent model P. berghei The practical work will teach participants fundamental technologies such as transfection, genotyping and phenotyping by flow cytometry and microscopy, and will also include cutting-edge technological approaches such as using next generation sequencing to simultaneously phenotype multiple strains in parallel.

The course is aimed at young researchers and new post-doc students, registration is free and travel bursaries are available. The course will be delivered by 3 researchers from the US and UK, in addition to guest speakers from Singapore.

NIH Grant opportunity - Innovative Technologies for Differential Diagnosis of Acute Febrile Illnesses (R21/R33)

NIH has published a call for applications for a new R21/R33 grant titled Innovative Technologies for Differential Diagnosis of Acute Febrile Illnesses (RFA-AI-14-062). For full RFA click here

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to solicit applications for early-stage translational research projects focused on the development of innovative, unbiased next generation, differential diagnostic technologies for acute febrile illnesses caused by infectious pathogens, excluding HIV.

Award budget:
Support for the R21 phase is limited to $275,000 in direct costs over the R21 two-year project period, with a maximum of $200,000 in direct costs allowed in any single year. The R33 award phase is limited to $300,000 in direct costs per year.

Research Objectives and Scope
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will provide support for research projects to establish proof-of-concept for novel, rapid and innovative medical diagnostic technologies and/or early-stage product development activities. The primary goal of such a diagnostic is to initiate appropriate therapeutic treatment during the initial visit for patients presenting acute fever in any point-of-care setting.

Research objectives may include the initial development of a novel technology or adaptation of an emerging technology to detect pathogens associated with acute febrile illnesses. Detection of host factors that would provide a differential diagnosis of bacterial infection that may provide clinically actionable information may also be included. A principal objective of this FOA is the development of innovative and novel diagnostic technologies. The following research areas are of particular interest:

  • Technologies that analyze clinical samples more accurately and rapidly than current diagnostic platforms and have utility within, or provide improvements upon, current clinical care and treatment.
  • Technologies capable of measuring in vivo analytes.
  • Integrated sample-to-answer sequencing-based platforms.
  • Diagnostic platforms that simultaneously detect multiple biomarkers.

For this FOA, the proposed diagnostic must be incubation-independent (i.e. designed to detect pathogens without requiring culture-bottle and/or streak plate incubations). Assays that can distinguish simultaneously between classes of pathogens (e.g. bacterial versus viral) are encouraged. At the end of the project period, a successful project will have demonstrated proof of principle with the capability of the developed technology to detect targeted pathogens in relevant live animal infection models (for in vivo detection technologies) or human clinical samples.

For the purpose of this FOA, the following features are of greatest importance for a proposed diagnostic:
  • Rapid: a target diagnostic test time of <1 hour to final result, including time required for clinical sample processing (if appropriate).
  • Culture independent: the diagnostic should focus on direct detection of pathogens or other biomarkers from human clinical samples.
  • Sensitive: the sensitivity should be equivalent to or exceed that of FDA-cleared diagnostics for proposed agent(s) from the same sample type.
  • Specific: the specificity should be equivalent to or exceed that of FDA-cleared diagnostics for proposed agent(s) from the same sample type.
  • Easy to use: for example, an integrated, closed sample-to-answer system with automated data analyses and/or result presentation and with minimal operator training and expertise required.
  • Cost-effective: projected production and operating costs should be as inexpensive as possible.
