This grant opportunity encourages interdisciplinary research aimed at promoting health, limiting symptoms and disease, and reducing health disparities in children and older adults living or spending time in non-traditional settings. These settings result in exposure to environmental pollutants and toxins that result in health risks, symptoms, and other health conditions/diseases including lower respiratory diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cardiovascular diseases. Risk identification and symptom management include prevention and behavior changes and actions to maintain health and prevent disease with an emphasis on the individual, family, and community which will advance nursing science.
For purposes of this FOA, non-traditional settings, for children and older adults, include, but are not limited to places such as community centers, pre-school and non-traditional school environments (e.g., churches, daycare, home-based schools, dormitories, and alternative schools), child and older adult foster care facilities, older adult day care facilities, half-way homes, assisted living and long-term care facilities.

NIH Technology-Based Interventions to Promote Engagement in Care and Treatment Adherence for Substance Abusing Populations with HIV (R01)
This grant seeks applications to test the utility and implementation of technological tools, including mobile devices, to promote engagement in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) care among substance abusing populations with HIV. Research projects may focus on (a) the use of technology to directly improve patient-level outcomes (i.e., adherence); (b) the capacity of HIV treatment providers and related service delivery organizations to adopt and integrate such technologies to promote HIV treatment outcomes; or (c) the use of technology to improve the organization and delivery of HIV treatment and services.

Incoming Fellowships are designed to give researchers from outside of Europe an
opportunity to work on research projects in Europe. This helps to develop research
cooperation between Europe and other parts of the world to everybody’s benefit.
International Incoming Fellowships are
directed exclusively at experienced researchers, namely those who
either:
1.
have at least 4 years of research
experience (full-time equivalent) after obtaining the degree which would
formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate either in the country in which
the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research will be carried
out; or
2.
are already in possession of a doctoral
degree (PhD).
All Marie Curie Actions have a
bottom-up approach, i.e. all fields of research of interest to the European Union are eligible for
funding. All research carried out must respect fundamental ethics principles
(see also the Ethics part of the Guide for Applicants).
The time limit to fulfill one
of these conditions is the deadline for proposal submission of the
relevant call.
The required research experience does
not include breaks during the research career.

NIH Partnerships for Interventions to Treat Chronic, Persistent and Latent Infections (R21/R33)
This grant opportunity seeks to stimulate basic and early-stage translational research focused on development of novel intervention strategies to clear persistent, chronic or latent infectious agents from the host. Responsive applications will define and address a therapeutic need specific to a targeted pathogen.
Examples of possible intervention strategies include, but are not limited to:
- Targeting pathogen latency establishment and/or maintenance mechanisms;
- Targeting mechanisms enabling pathogen evasion of host immune responses;
- Enhancing pathogen susceptibility to existing interventions;
- Modulation of pathogen-specific immune cells;
- Restoration and/or enhancement of specific aspects of the immune system
- Targeting of specific metabolic sub-populations responsible for chronic infections
- Eliminating replication competent viral nucleic acids from infected cells
The grant is worth $275,000 for the first two years, and then an additional $300,000 per year for three years for a total of $1,175,000.
A letter of intent must be submitted by June 13, 2012. The full application should be submitted by July 13, 2012.

Partnerships for Development of Vaccine Technologies (R01)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National
Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of
Health (NIH), invites research applications for projects focused on preclinical
development of candidate technologies (including adjuvants) that would improve
vaccine effectiveness and/or simplify vaccine delivery to patient populations
during a natural outbreak of an infectious disease or following the intentional
release of an infectious agent. Applications must include a Product Development
Strategy attachment and demonstrate substantive investment by at least one
industrial participant.
Letter of intent due date: May 26, 2012
Award budget: Budgets for direct costs of up to $750,000 per year
may be requested. In addition, applicants may request up to a total of $300,000 for major equipment in
the first year of the award to ensure that research aims can be met and
biohazards can be contained.
Scope of the proposed project should determine the project

is 5 years.

The high cost of translating therapeutic discoveries into
clinically-available agents can deter the development of promising
therapeutics. When private sector resources are limited, BrIDGs’ in-kind
services could help researchers span the gap between the preclinical and
clinical stages of therapy development and continue to evaluate agents that may
improve the standard of care for patients with a variety of diseases and
disorders. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to
invite investigators to apply for access to government-funded contract
resources needed for the preclinical development of therapeutic agents.
Applications are accepted for the development of
the following therapeutic agents:
- Small
molecules
- Peptides
- Oligonucleotides
- Gene
vectors
- Recombinant
proteins
- Monoclonal
antibodies
Potential therapies for any disease or disorder
may be submitted. Vaccines, devices and diagnostic agents are ineligible for
