MRC/DFID/NIHR Call for research to improve adolescent health in LMIC settings

The Medical Research Council (MRC), the UK Government Department of Health, and National Institutes of Health Research (NIHR), have launched a call for research to improve adolescent health in LMIC settings. Together the three funders have agreed to commit up to £10 million to this scheme.

This call for proposals seeks to provide the research evidence needed to effect real and practical changes to improve adolescent health in Low and Middle Income Countries.

Proposals should identify clearly the health issues and/or risk factors to be addressed. Applicants should describe the pathway for how the proposed approach can be scalable, as well as highlighting any potential generalizability of findings to improve the health of adolescents in other settings. Proposals should demonstrate how outcomes could be implemented within systems and seek to engage with related social and economic barriers within these systems. We encourage genuine interdisciplinary collaborations across social science, biomedical science and other disciplines.

Applications will be accepted from Principal Investigators based at organisations either in the UK or in Low, Lower-middle and Upper-middle income countries.

UK Travel Grants - Researcher Links / Newton Fund

Researcher Links Travel Grants provide financial support for early-career researchers to undertake an international research placement to strengthen links for future collaboration, build research capacity in developing economies, and enhance the researcher's career opportunities.

Researchers that reside in the UK can apply for funding to visit a university or research institution in one of the partner countries, and those residing in one of the partner countries can apply for funding to come to the UK. The mobility must occur between 01 February 2018 and 31 January 2019

PARTNER COUNTRY
Thailand. Researchers that reside in the UK can apply for funding to visit a university or research institution in Thailand, and those residing in Thailand can apply for funding to come to the UK.

DEADLINE
13 June 2017, 16.00 (UK time)

National co-funder: Thailand Research Fund (TRF)                                                
Minimum duration: 4 weeks
Maximum duration: 24 weeks

The call is also open to other fields of Health and Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Engineering.

TRF will fund Thai researchers. The rates requested will be paid in Thai Baht using the exchange rate of: 43.30 THB/ GBP. Flight ticket: 70,000 THB, Preparation cost: 10,000 THB, Subsistence cost: 19,000 THB per week (As TRF is unable to grant a budget for Child-care, this is to be paid upon arrival in the UK at £21.25 per week (5% of £425 subsistence per week)) Visa cost: 6,750 THB,  Insurance cost: 2,900 THB per week, Consumables: 2812.50 THB per week

Medical Research Council Thailand-UK Workshop and Pre-Call Announcement on Infectious Diseases and Non-Communicable Diseases

Workshop opportunity and Call Pre-announcement

The Thailand Research Fund (TRF),  the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) and Medical Research Council (MRC) are pleased to announce that they will be launching joint calls for research proposals on Non-Communicable Diseases and Infectious Diseases around the middle of this year.

TRF, NSTDA and MRC will be holding a workshop for researchers on 17-19 May 2017 in Bangkok to explore UK-Thai opportunities for collaboration in these research areas.

Two separate calls will be launched that will run in parallel with one another:
1) The MRC-TRF call will focus upon non-communicable diseases (NCDs); and
2) The MRC-NSTDA call will focus upon infectious diseases

Both research calls will focus on science areas of relevance to Thailand and the Thai population.
Under the MRC-TRF Non-Communicable Diseases call, the research proposals will focus specifically upon the following diseases:

Cardiovascular diseases  Diabetes Mellitus  Osteoporosis  Metabolic Syndrome
Under the MRC-NSTDA Infectious Diseases call, the research proposals will focus specifically upon the following diseases:

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) especially multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB)  Emerging infectious diseases especially leishmaniasis and influenza Measles Mosquito Borne diseases

The funders, TRF, NSTDA and MRC will welcome research proposals that will have scientific outcomes of relevance to the prevention, treatment, management and/or control of the above listed diseases in Thailand. This may include, but will not be limited to, basic discovery research, understanding the mechanisms of the diseases, biomarker identification, novel detection and diagnosis through to the development of novel preventatives (vaccines) and therapeutics.
The call will be for proposals of duration of up to 3 years. All projects that receive funding must be completed by March 2021.

The workshop
The upcoming TRF/NSTDA/MRC workshop will be an opportunity for Thai researchers to meet researchers from UK institutions and explore opportunities for research collaboration. The agenda for the workshop will include time for networking and sharing information about UK and Thai research expertise and areas of interest, as well as visits to leading research centres in and around Bangkok.

We would like to see expressions of interest from academics who would be interested in representing their institution at this workshop in Bangkok, Thailand.

Due to a limited number of spaces, we will only be able to invite 20 attendees per call to attend. Therefore, attendees will be expected to represent the wider interests of their institution as well as their individual interests.

Mobile Health: Technology and Outcomes in Low and Middle-Income Countries (mHealth)

Mobile Health: Technology and Outcomes in Low and Middle-Income Countries (R21) (PAR-16-292)

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage exploratory/developmental research applications that propose to conduct research to develop or adapt innovative mobile health (mHealth) technology specifically suited for low and middle-income countries (LMICs) and determine the health-related outcomes associated with the implementation of the technology. Of highest interest are innovative, well-designed multidisciplinary projects that aim to generate generalizable knowledge for the field.

Eligibility

• Applicants are required to propose partnerships between at least one U.S. institution and one LMIC institution (with LMIC defined by The World Bank as low-, lower-middle-, or upper-middle-income economies).
• Program Directors/Principal Investigators may be employed in either a U.S. or LMIC institution, but should plan to build capacity in mHealth research in the LMIC institution(s). See full Eligibility Information for more details.

The overall goal of the FOA is to contribute to the evidence base for the use of mobile technology to improve clinical outcomes and public health while building research capacity in LMICs and establishing research networks in this area. Applicants are required to propose partnerships between at least one U.S. institution and one LMIC institution and the proposed research plan should strengthen the mHealth research capabilities at the LMIC institution.

MRC/AHRC GCRF Global Public Health; Partnership Awards pre-call announcement

• The funding available for each call from MRC and AHRC is £2million in total. The duration of these grants should be between 18-24 months. The funding requested should be commensurate with the activities intended for these projects, but as they are not intended to fund pure research or basic science, the main costs for these are likely to be staff wages and travel costs. Costs of up to £200,000 fEC could be appropriate, although the scale of the awards will be flexible to meet the needs of the research.

Global Infectious Disease Research Training Program (GID)

Program Overview

The Global Infectious Disease (GID) program addresses research training needs related to infectious diseases that are predominantly endemic in or impact upon people living in developing countries. The training programs include a variety of research training options to match the needs of the developing country institution. The ultimate goal is to build a critical mass of researchers and support staff to conduct independent infectious disease research in developing country institutions.

Applicant institutions for both the full institutional grant and the planning grant may submit more than one application, provided that each application is scientifically distinct.
